Hi. I have a Peugeot Boxer Auto Sleepers motorhome - petrol 2L, P Reg 1996 - which needs a new Exhaust.

While I was in town the other day I noticed a Kwik Fit branch, so I thought I'd pop in.

To my suprise they had a ramp to get it up on and have quoted me c£170 for a complete new exhaust -(thats without the cat, which is fine.)

So wondered if anyone could please advise me if i should have them do this work for me?

I've always been wary of chains like Kwik Fit... and wonder is this a reasonable price?

Do exhausts vary in quality?

Would the one that they'd fit be a bit cheap and shoddy, or are they much of a muchness?

Where do others go to get this work done?

any comments / advice much appreciated...

Keep away from Krap Fit we have have nothing but problems with both our cars and they would not do anything about the problems .

Fitted cheap nasty systems thats why they are cheap.

I would think you are going to get quite a few replies saying the same.

i can only say positive things about kwik fit ask them if the exhaust is a premium make or budget because there is a big difference.

As i say i can only praise them i have used them for years without problem.

Motorhomes are the lowest depreciating vehicles on the road so it makes sense to keep it in the best possible condition. I would recommend fitting original equipment or at least OE quality.

Glad to hear it at least it will be fitted by a proper mechanic and won't fall off after a few months.

You might find their tyre fitter and brake specialist fit the exhausts, would you let a plumber or plasterer re-wire your house

Do you know that remarks like Kens get right up my nose, a tyre/brake/exhaust depot specialise in fitting- Tyre/Brakes/Exhausts and are a damn sight more knowledgeable than any main dealer about these products, it stands to reason, because they deal with all makes, a main dealer only knows his own particular make, i owned a depot for twenty years and i would put any of my fitters up against a main dealer any day, plus the fact that i didn't charge £85 per hour just to look at the vehicle. My advice for what it's worth, is find a private owned depot that's been there for a good length of time and use them and keep away from Kwikfit and the like, the advice you get from them will be good, i should know, i gave enough out in my twenty years. PS, ask them for an exhaust with a three year guarantee.

Quotes like mine get up your nose yet your agreeing with me
I've been in the motor trade for 30 year and some of the things I've seen done from these fast fit/auto centres etc are frightening.
These lads have never passed any exams, never been to college, their just low paid workers who get shown how to fit things then have to get on with it.
I never said go to a main dealers, a local independent garage with properly trained mechanics will do the job nicely

My brother lives 60 miles away and when he was over he went to the local kwik fit for an exhaust on his honda prelude and was told that he needed a new ABS unit also (they just thought they would check) so he told them to do it, when he got the £650 bill  (it was a few years ago)  He took great delight in refusing to pay as their xxxxxxxx branch in his home town had changed it ten days previously.

They can't even rip you off competently

a couple of years ago my car needed an oil change and they  had an offer on for oil and filter, so i rang up booked my car in as i was on the phone my workmate asked me to book his in, so i went down first and they were busy said they needed the filter so i said i would wait (it had been booked 24hrs and they were busy) eventually it was done so piad and went back my mate went in they had nothing in and the fitters were playing football while changing the oil they said there was some work needed on some parts and would he like a quote, he asked if it was a mot failure if these parts were not replaced and they replied it would indeed fail, so he replied thats funny it only passed yesterday with that he paid for the oil change and drove back. the car had been moted the day before as i picked him up for work. these offers are loss leaders hoping for extra work. for me to buy the oil and filter was more than running in to them.

The silencer on my VW T4 campervan came adrift on tour. The nearest Kwik Fit branch (in Cambridge) could not have been more helpful, and in just over 90 minutes obtained a new one, fitted it, and I was on my way, for £118. I was expecting to pay more, so it may be a budget one, but they do give you a 3 year certificate of guarantee.
