I put a deposit down today . I will pick up my first motorhome on July 16th .
Originally I wanted a van conversion, such as an autosleeper, but when viewing in the flesh I realised just how little storage they have. It didn't help when I got my OH there, he couldn't stand up, and he felt claustrophobic. This is the same OH who has always refused to camp, but he will come away with me in a motorhome, if I have the right one.
So I've bought a 2001 Compass Calypso. It's coachbuilt, but not much bigger than van conversions for the Cornish lanes. It seems way more spacious and there is space to store things such as outside chairs. I got the dealer to throw in 12 months tax, essentials such as hookup lead, water hose and gas canister, and to fit a new cambelt.
Looking forward to meeting you on our little Cornish lanes!

I collected it today. I'm glad I insisted on a new cambelt as part of the package as I have a copy of the service invoice - just over £600 inc VAT. I know all the filters, spark plugs, oil etc are new when I picked it up. It'll save me paying for it...
I drove to Tescos and stocked up on a few bits. It easily fits in a car parking space width wise, but is too long. I ended up majorly over hanging the space behind. If this is the case is there a way to avoid paying for two car parking spaces? Admitedly it would be easier if I had someone else with me when parking, but no matter what I'm too long. I did look for a space that had grass I could over hang, but there were prickly bushes everywhere! I just parked a long way from the store...
At home I had to wait for my OH to help me park down the side of the house. We'd measured it and knew it would fit (the drive has a narrow point) but my god did it feel tight. I doubt I'll ever be able to do it alone. However unlike when I first parked it at home, it is now only visible if you look down our drive, and it's blocked in by a car which only moves at weekends - surely that's better than a post!
I'm now partially loaded (dishwasher is cleaning all my camping plates, glasses, pots and pans and a few (cough!) bits I've bought especially for it. I can't wait to get away!
Well done it must be daunting when first getting a longish camper ..we had a 25ft once & i had to help the O/H park & that was on the road in between cars ,you get used to it the more you drive it & we never park on car parks in towns & didn't care when taking up 2 spaces in supermarkets hope you both enjoy camping 5star
well done we have a 2001 calypso, had this one about 5yrs now and had a 96 model before. we average about 34mpg on a long run cruising about 60mph. i have logged fuel down but it will criuse into the seventies if needed, ours will have to have the belts changed next year, have changed the tyres this year due to age not wear only got 26,000 on clock, and fitted a new exhaust system complete with cat. they are good vans for a couple and the bed is huge. we use the shower in ours prefering just basic sites, for more room we got a brass net telescopic curtain rod and hang a shower curtain from it and hang the rod from the litle rail over the windows on each side makes a changing room saves closing all the blinds. enjoy your calypso we do.
