hi ive just bourght my first vw T25 camper, ive had tents and caravans in the past but wanted something different, the problem is its a nightmare to drive going up gears is fine but coming down from 3rd gear to 2nd is a real problem it just doesnt go in, its making approaching roundabouts hell, any advice would be great or if anyone knows how much it costs for a gear replacement including fitting,
Hi, I had a T25 (still regret selling it), rather than being a gearbox problem, it might be the gearchange mechanism itself, (a common fault), an obvious sign is a very 'sloppy' gear lever when in neutral. You can buy all the bits to repair it from Just Kampers quite cheap and even if your not mechanically minded yourself, it's an easy job for a local garage so shouldn't cost too much.
If you need a new gearbox, have a look round the 'Club 80-90' website or 'Brickwerks' for a reasonable priced replacement.
Hope this helps and take my advice, never sell it , you'll only want another one
You need to get the linkage checked, adjustment is in front underneath above spare wheel, there is a procedure you must follow involving making up a wooden spacer. The Haynes manual for this van tells you how. Get a copy from Halfords.
Also the linkage at the gearbox end could be worn. You also need to check the gearbox oil level, the level plug is behind the gear linkage & very inaccessable. It would be good to change the gearbox oil. You can use a modern synthetic gear oil in these vans(use only mineral oil in the engine tho).
If you have no mechanical knowledge you will have to find a specialist who is used to working on these vans. Take it to your local garage & they will charge you a fortune with little result.
Speak to other T25 owners in your area to find out where they get their vans fixed.
Worst case it could be the gearbox on the way out, the bronze syncro rings break in the end & then you are stuck beside the road with a jammed gearbox with a recon gearbox required.
Hang on a mo, is the gearchange 4 or 5 speed? you don't mention. If its the 5 i do hope you are using the right gears, ie, first is pushing to your left against a spring pressure, second is up, third is straight down, fourth is up and fith is down. The reason i have explained this is beacuse you sound just like my daughter in law when she bought her T25, she kept stalling it by being in the wrong gears, then again if its a 4 speed box have someone check the above ie, the linkage or have the Clutch checked ie, the freeplay, ie, how much pressure you require before the pedal is stiff. Hope this has helped a bit.
