i have a kampa travel pod awning for my nissan camper van and have trouble keeping the figure of eight bar attached to the van does any one have any suggestions ?
We can't successfully attach a figure of eight to our gutter as it is full of some kind of sealant so we use the pole and clamp method. A pole goes through the awning sleeve and clamps onto the rail with 3 clamps and tightens with wing nuts. Alternatively, you can buy an awning fixing kit for fig. of 8 attachments, but for this, you would need to fix a caravan type awning rail to your camper.
My van has a pop top and so it's not possible to " try just attaching a couple of throw-over straps and pegging it down?" as the pop top gets in the way.
On a similar van that I used to have, I had a "proper" driveaway awning and I never did solve the problem of the figure of 8 thingy falling out of the gutter all the time.
My current van has a length of awning channel secured to the side above the gutter which the awning could be fitted to - but it does entail taking the awning down if I want to drive off site.
I don't think there's an easy solution.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.
You can also buy suckers meant for vans with no gutters. justkampers have them. The pole/clamp method works best tho the awning should be supplied with a pole. jk do the clamps.
You say you have the attachment rail already fixed Why not modify what you have -pop a strong zip between your awning and the fixing tape. sorted - It's only sewing after all!
I have a Fiamma awning which has a "rail" and rather than use this as you infer "very fiddly" -I loop the drive away awning over the top of the Fiamma and just secure the ends in the front and back doors or just tie a crude rope to fix it to the actual Fiamma.
I agree it is a pain in the neck to sort, I was looking at these quick release fixings on ebay the other day, I might have a play with those next season.
The other idea that crossed my mind was to use some stiff cord through the attached fixing rail and fasten this to the Driveaway awning Tee-pee door closure style, again this would mean more sewing and fixing of eyelets etcetera- but we all know there has to be a better way than the existing system.
