I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED A SATELLITE DISH & RECEIVER FOR MY MOTORHOME AND INTEND USING IT IN THE UK & FRANCE THIS SUMMER.
I HAVE TRIED USING A SATELLITE FINDER BUT WITH LITTLE SUCCESS AND WAS INTERESTED TO READ THAT MANY MEMBERS FIND THEIR SATELLITE BY USING THEIR TV (NOT SURE HOW TO DO THIS).
I AM A SINGLE PERSON AND THEREFORE DO NOT HAVE SOMEONE TO CHECK THE SIGNAL STRENGTH ETC.
HOW WOULD THE MEMBERS FIND ASTRA 2 IN MY CASE (PRECISE AND STAGE BY STAGE DETAILS IF POSSIBLE AS I AM NOT FULLY CONVERSANT WITH THIS SORT OF TECHNOLOGY).
I WOULD BE MOST GRATEFUL FOR HELP OFF ANY MEMBERS PLEASE.

Thank you for the advice, I was not aware of capitals & shouting.
You say the site given is the bible for setting up satellite - which site do you mean? - is it the one posted by Inner Zone?

Hi jenksky
What type of sat finder are you using? If you try to use the finder on your t.v. you will find it's far too slow for a novice & you will probably end up throwing the whole lot in the bin.
1st off, go buy a compass from poundland you don't need owt fancy
2nd, get one of these ebay 230492365832 ( cut n paste this item number )these sat finders are ideal for the novice to use.
Right get setup, face your dish south, attach finder to LNB on dish then cable from sat box to sat finder, adjust dial on finder until you get a tone, needle on dial prob at zero, slowly turn your dish to the east watch dial it will move up + you will also get a tone gets louder as you start to lock onto sat, move until needle starts to drop back down then just fine fine tune by tilting your dish until you get MAXIMUM signal on you sat finder.
I'm presuming your wanting to tune into SKY, using you sky tv remote, press sevices scroll down to no 4 system setup click select, now scroll down to no 6 signal test click select, you will now be looking at your inbuilt sat finder on your sky box, top 2 are the quality of the signal, 3rd is telling you your locked on sat, next two are VITAL so remember them Network ID 0002 Tranport stream 07d4 if these numbers arn't showing you've locked onto the wrong satellite so retune your dish
Hope this helps a bit, when i'm tuning in i always start at South & sweep to the east as Sky is first sat you come to, there are 3 close together so easy to lock onto wrong one
If you really want to tune in easily, you could get a more advanced satfinder where you select the satellite you want and then it will not lock onto wrong sat. I set mine up at the dish without even connecting to sat receiver or tv.
The only drawback is that the meter cost £158, but it takes very little time to lock on and because you just need to take the meter to the dish it is easy for one person.

Thanks for the help Mick - where do you paste the no suggested ie ebay 230492365832?
Tried it in the general search box but no joy.
Lots of different sat finders - not sure which is best for me.

Sorry mate the one i posted has ended, try this one 20 days left 220513744906 cut & paste into general search box it will then pop up 4u it's up at £6.95 you can find them at £5,if nothing still happens search, SAT FINDER, if you do pick a different 1 cheaper from another seller make sure it comes with a free patch lead, as that will cost you about £4 extra from elsewhere, any probs give us a shout, get you setup easy peasy, contrary to popular belief this isn't rock science to do, first time is the hardest but once the penny drops simples
I'd go along with Silverwood on this one, but will just to add my bit of advice.
I use the Comag set up from Lidl with no problem, we even got the thing fired up away up on the Isle of Skye last month. As a rule of thumb the satellite your after is Astra 28.2 and is at about 146deg magnetic. If when using the built in beeper on your set you get full signal but no picture the chances are you've hit the German Astra 19.2 and you will find your correct satellite slightly to the left.If your set up is the same type it's worth noting that the arm which supports the LNB should be about horizontal and the LNB should be skewed by about 13deg. To you and me this means the thing is rotated a wee bit clockwise from vertical when viewed from the front of the dish.Just have a butchers at he other satellites around the site you're on or as you approach a site and you'll see what I mean.
Once you've done it a few times it does come easy, honest. This site will give you loads of advice, mostly quite good...
Also have a look at Dishpointer.com.

Oh forgot to say this, if your going to use SKY & you need to activate a smart card, never never never tell them its in a motorhome or caravan, cos you will get a lecture about it's only to be used on fixed addresses, strange as all caravan shops sell them for mobile purposes
