We are about to take a jump and buy a motorhome    My question is ... is there much difference in price between buying soon or waiting until the season is "over" - we have about £20,000 or so to spend, and don't need finance etc, so can buy either privately or from a dealer. The other option is to spend a bit less on a car/caravan, although my partner is reluctant to tow... decisions, decisions...

I have heard you get some good deals at shows... any advice much appreciated.

If you can wait you will likely be able to get a better deal "off season" although  believe the best time is spring when dealers want to shift stock that's been sitting a while. You can get some very good deals at shows as well. Off season would usually mean you've got a much better choice (of second hand vans at least) than height of summer.

Buying from a dealer does mean you're paying a premium but you'll get a proper PDI (from a reputable dealer) and at lest a 3 month warranty, which on the last 2 vans I've had has been necessary.

I've also noticed that many private ads these days seem to want prices very similar to dealers with no added benefits.

Its a way off, but the thick of winter will get you a good deal. Ideally, after weeks or months of foul cold wet rain, ice and snow. As firstly, the dealers wont have sold anything for a good while, and, the van would likely be showing any damp problems it may have. Unlike during drier warmer weather that could mask such problems if they arent too bad at the time.
Good luck.
