Travelling from Calais to Spain in August, got to get down there in 2/3 days. Arriving in Calais just after midnight anyone know of a good, safe aires, not too far out of Calais to stay at just overnight. New to travelling abroad, done plenty in England and wild camping.
Thanks.
If you are coming into Calais docks You can just bear right for Calais town as you come out, go back around roundabout & head back into dock towards checkin, take 'without tickets' sign, leads you into parking area, plenty park in there.
Otherwise it depends which way you are going, if towards Boulogne you can stop in the services about 10mins drive down the A16 or just past there & turn off at Marquise & park in the Aldi supermkt carpark on right as you come into the town.
From the stories I have heard about, I would want to be at least 30 miles away from Calais, as Tentz mentions the Docks would probably be the best bet, as no doubt the grounds are patrolled.
Supermarket carparks in small towns are a good place for a late overnight stop in France with motorhome or caravan, safe as they are off the motorway but easily found because they are signposted as you drive into town. Nobody bothers you as wheelclamps don't appear to have crossed the channel.
There are two places you can actually stop at in Calais, one is a proper air and its 7 euros the other is a big large car park by the marina and its also 7 euros, money is paid at the local (very near camping municipal) they are both very easy to get to, when you come off the ferry follow the sortie/exit signs, at the very first roundabout follow the CENTRE VILLE signs, and then the CAMPING CAR air signs, the ferries will be on your right as you drive, when you approach the PHARE (lighthouse) you will see the large car park on you right just over the roundabout, the proper air is to your right, keep following the the signs for the PLAGE and the CAMPING CAR signs and voila', we always used to stop there, but alas on principle now i will NOT STOP IN CALAIS if you paid me, re. the car par was for as far back i can remember (1974) always free, and i'm not being big headed when i say that me along with numerous campers from all over Europe signed a petition for the provision of that AIR by the beach, which is what it is now.
We always stop at the camping car aire by the beach - very good if sometimes noisy from ships coming and going all night. 7 euros, but free water and it has the best restaurant in Calais overlooking the waste water dump! Also baguettes available from local shop. Others recommend the camping car section of the Cite Europe shopping centre near tunnel entrance - I have never tried this but it is supposed to be secure. you then have the run of Carrefour supermarket next morning, but unfortunatly you cannot get cheap diesel there - height barriers.
Hi Brians dad, the one by Carrefour is in my opinion the best one we stopped at with friends, ie the police station is only a stone throw away and we always feel safe there.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
