I suppose it depends on what you've got in mind?(..price,how it's to be mounted, storage etc).
I know a lot on here reckon that a cheap, compact domestic aerial is the way to go,as they're far cheaper(..although they still tend to be quite bulky and awkward to store).
Our current MH came with a Status 530(?) thru the roof job and that works great..but I expect it'd be pricey for what it is..
Hi mate, why not buy a small digital/freeview box? i had one in my talisman for almost a year and it worked fantastic, the box is not bigger then 4x5x1 the only problem is that its not 12 volts, but as its very low in wattage i used a small inverter, never had any problems try this site www.curtisint.com, got mine from asda at only £12.99, don't know if they are still available though. You don't have to buy an expensive aerial either. Now its in my bedroom and doing a fantastic job, i was quoted £79 for a new aerial,, dohhhh, £12.99 and i'm watching freeview, not bad eh.
Our freeview is part of the telly, using a regular 'house' aerial. 80 odd channels is enough for anyone in the 'great outdoors'! It works far better than the crappy status perched up there.
As I understand it there is no such thing as a digital aerial, although the trade seem to advertise such things to get us to spend more money during the digital switchover. It is the tuners that need to pick up the signal and this can be with existing aerial.
George is correct-there is no such thing as a Digital Aerial, there are aerials which are more suitable for digital signals such as the Staus 530 that pepe63 mentions.
With digital tv and radio you either get a signal or you dont, there is no in between as with the analogue system.
What makes the Staus 530 better than the terrible 315 fitted to hundreds of motorhomes and caravans ?
The 315 is all directional which is a compromise at best whilst the 530 is directional so you can point it in the direction of the transmitter.
You might say, dont know where the transmitter is, well there are apps for the Android Smart Phones that will tell you (suppose there is one for that other thing from apple) or download transmitter sites from the internet and buy a small compass which may help.
As to where the transmitter is,I just tend to point it the same way that everyone else on site is..or ask the warden when we book in..
..admittedly,the former is not much good if you're the first ones there though ..or as we had on one occassion, when after we'd orientated our aerial the same as our "neigbour" and we'd beeen tatting about for ages trying to get some channels...only for it to turn out they hadn't had any luck either,so they'd given up,just left their aerial as it was and gone down the pub!
I had a status through the roof arial and instead of carrying telly and a freeview box as has been suggested, carry only my laptop and a USB digital receiver which comes complete with a remote. I used to take the laptop anyway! So have reduced the onboard storage. There's just the two of us so the screen size is fine. The USB device works fine and (on the right site) can get over 200 channels, complete with "pause live tv" and record functions. The device cost just over £15 and was a total surprise in terms of functionality!
A so called 'digital' aerial is just a hi gain aerial, ie it pulls in the signal. It helps reception if you are in an area that still has both digi & analogue signals running. Once the analogue signal is switched off in a given area the digi signal is boosted & you should recieve full service thru whatever aerial worked on the old signal.
Your freeview reception in a motorhome will obviously depend on lay of the land but also if there is still an analogue signal in the area. The UK will be fully digi by 2012.
just a cheap standard aeriel on a pole put into a patio umbrella holder then turn until you get a good signal everywhere is running digital at the moment so you should get most of the channels.
