I bought a 1979 Transit CI, two years ago. Haven`t been anywhere in it yet, Anyway,I posted a message some time ago, and had a very nice reply from Billy.
Earlier this year, I had a problem with the heater. (2.4 York diesel engine.) Investigation, showed that the connection to the block via the pipe to the heater marix, was blocked- off with a wooden plug???? The insert into the block was broken off. Had all that fixed. But the heater output was poor. I flushed the system to no avail. Then the engine began to overheat. Local garage advised the water-pump was u/s, so I booked it in for replacement. Then the really bad news, the cylinder-head was cracked. I bought a replacement engine on Ebay, but due to delays etc, never received it. I then bought a replacement cylinder-head, only to be told by the garage that it was the wrong type. (something to do with the injectors and combustion chamber). The van has now been in the garage since June. Told yesterday that a partial refund for the wrong head is imminent. Now in negotiations for another cylinder-head.
I had no idea, that there were so many variants of engine for Transits of that vintage. The camper itself is in good condition, and I would be loathed to sell it...had an offer for it with/without MOT.
Hopefully, if all goes well, I should be `on the road` shortly.
We had always been camping previously, but failing health for both of us, needed a remedy. This seemed to be such a wonderful idea, if I knew before of the hassle that I have had, I would still be under canvas. Two years without a break in the wilderness is not on.
I found out that the engine number is DJ160080, wondering if this odd or something?
Well matey I think it has to be said and I hate to be the one to say it but, if it was mine I would rid myself of your transit woes and accept the offer you have on your Tranny, that York engine always was a load of Cr-p even when relatively young,I would hate to think I was relying on a 25 year old one. I hope you find some way of getting back to your camping and sincerely hope your health improves, worrying about your camper won't be helping either. I hope my post is not upsetting to you and sorry to be so blunt.
Hi there. A better idea maybe would be to convert it to a later engine ie the 2.5di or even simpler a 2.0 petrol. BillyBun and others are well up on this subject.
I am sure for less than £500 it could be easily acheived rather than sell a good vehicle, as the mechanicals are the least of your worries on a 25 yr old van, as compared to rust and rotten wood which are more of a concern and would more likely be the end of such a vehicle.
wouldnt bother with another head as the chances are the bottom end may be shot, would suggest looking in scrappies as from memory (used to be techy with Ford) all RWD tranny's use the same engine mounts and backplate.. Would be looking for diesel from up to the new transit as the duratorque lump has a load of complicated electronics. Anything up to about 2000 year
do disrespect to Simon but wouldnt dream of putting in a petrol, far too much work re electrics plus fuel system work
hi dave and jenny.......................how about this then,..........a early 2.5 di engine from a 1986,round table father christmas sleigh, only came out few times a year, low low mileage,.....your 2.4 starter, alternator exhaust, gearbox, clutch, etc will bolt right on,fuel lines to.............engine has new timing belt, oil and filter,i took it out of transit mk 2 myself, will fit right in your camper,no need for the ole heater plugs etc, engine does not smoke it is a brilliant runner and pulled the transit it was in at 70 mph no problem.....................cost £100....................................merry christmas from billy in brum.............if you want it you dont have to have it now, when your ready, just let me know if intrested..............take care :-)....................................the smiley faces are not working on my pc,anyone else having the same trouble ?
yeah, i'd say it's probably easiest, cheapest and best to source another engine. That one billy's got sounds like a bargain with new timing belt and all. failing that, go to a loval van dismantlers and get a newer transit engine. shouldn't cost more than about £200, there's millions about, and another £100 or so to get it thrown in. all the best...
Well, I am delighted with the replies to this topic. Thankyou all so much. You are lovely people.
Billy, that is magic. I must first check the situation at the garage, although I`m miffed with their inactivity over the months, I would not like to call a halt if they`re in full flow at the present.
I am on way there now, telephoning is a waste of time in my experience, they are experts at delaying tactics.
the compresors and genies you see at side of road on small trailor, old ones are yorkies.rather go for di though pencil injector and mt75 box.year is stamped on front of head.
hi caulky (dave) ,i have put an add in on the free adds above, ive put the engine in for 10000 pounds so no one will reply, except if there having a laugh, you can contact me this way safely,...........wishing you all the best billybun in brum...... :-)
