Nearly 2 weeks ago some scumbag tried to pinch my Lilly Bug from the front of the house (I use her as my everyday vehicle too). They had smashed the ignition lock and not done much else as luckily I have an imobiliser. I have since replaced the ignition barrel started to check all ok but not driven her.
I went to drive her for the first time tonight, and the steering doesn't work!!!!!!!! Very stiff and a grinding noise. Anyone any ideas quick!!!! I'm booked to be away from tomorrow. I trawled the usual places but can't find an answer I'm asuming it's probably something to do with sterring lock but not sure where to start!!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

When you say you changed the lock do you mean THE WHOLE THING????? Because if i remember right, its not good just replacing the barrel (ignition) you have to replace the whole lot. Also the steering lock mechanism (i want to get this right its a long time sine my VW. days) comes with special snap bolts, so a i assume you left the old lock on but just changed the ignition barrel to get it started, am i right?????? Keep us informed.
i have just changed the ignition barrel as I thought that was all that was damaged. I did buy the whole thing metal bit that goes round steering column with the ignition barrell in it but as couldn't get the steering lock off as unable to get key in thought the barrell would be a better option! Obviously not lol Don't even know where to start to find the steering lock mechanism lol

you need to change the whole lot,as the locking wedge that goes into the steering column is damaged, the unit is normally held in place by 2 sheerable bolts,so getting old 1 off is a bit of a pain as the bolt heads are now missing, either use a nail punch to loosen them or drill them out, refit new unit with new bolts supplied until they sheer off
Or if you can get hold of a small dremel (small drill) with a bit of patience you can grind the heads off, obviously you need to get hold of a grinding wheel for it, and then as above
Thank you all for your responses we ended up having the best weekend at Pilgrims in Boston (check em out). It turned out had smashed steering lock and the large bit of metal was lodged between steering spindle and tube which surrounds. After queing at Halfords got the stuff (on second visit) to remove steering wheel and remove the said lump of metal lol so off we trotted at 2 instead of 11 lol thank you again all of you xxxx
