Well it all depends on how you drive/load combination tyre pressures all of this can have an affect on the camper, but most of all people fit air suspensions to improve the ride and comfort it does make a difference going round bends and around roundabouts, i had it fitted to my autotrail cherokee some 14 years ago, but i must say that i preferred the spring assisters that were fitted to my previous camper in Germany a kontiky on an old fiat chassis (square looking ) and believe it or not i still have them in my shed.
I've fitted air assistors to our current van, purely because we needed the extra rear ground clearance(..the rear steadies would "bottom out" when exiting our steep driveway)..however they really did make a difference to the handling(..that's if you can actually call how a MH goes around corners as "handling" ?!? ).
I did fit Grayston coil spring assistors to our previous van and they worked well(raising it about 30mm at the wheel) and at around half the price of the air set up,I would've fitted them again,it was only because I was uncertain as to how much they would actually lift the current, larger & heavier van(..it would've been a bit late, finding out that it still grounded out, after I'd fitted 'em...).
However as you say you've got a " camper van",I assume it may be a panel van conversion..in which case I would recommend the Grayston spring assistors(..unless of cause it's a ruddy great big bus? )
Most people consider assisted suspension when the lever springs wont hold the chassis, i.e. the rubber stops are permanently on the spring lever stop. I did the Grayston spring solution as I had had an MOT warning, the rubber stops were too close to the chassis. Been there 5 years now and gone through MOT's with no problem.
rear 100% air suspension is a wonderful thing, most ambulances have it, Royal mail had it on thier LDV Convoys supplied from Dunlop
Front air suspension is unusual but achievable
The whole of a Range Rover can now be had air sprung
A good repairer is the first thing you need to locate (just in case) bearing in mind most garages wont have a clue whereas air suspension is old hat on HGV's (especially trailers) so a comercial vehicle workshop is handy
I choose Grayston springs as when I checked the alternatives at a Rally I found the air assisted were so much heavier. This in turn takes away your carrying capacity.
