we have a m/van in the uk which we love, & we are thinking of touring the west coast of usa in a hired m/van for a few weeks . we have never been to usa before & we are a little apprehensive of booking all this on line.we would be intrested to hear from anyone who has done this & used a good reasonable reputable company ,& has any tips or suggestions .is it best to go on an organised tour, or to do your own thing .we travel a lot in france  in our m/v & prefer to  travel  from place to place & not book in advance , or  to stay on aires. can you do this sort of thing in usa? we would appreciate any help or advice anyone has to give us.cheers

You might find a few ideas here, even if you don't want to book anything through the Club.

I did what you are thinking a number of years ago, and toured most of California and nevada, visiting national parks and the popular citys, it was really great.

What I would suggest would be to book a package which would include flights, first night in hotel ( jet lag) van hire, and last night in hotel before flight home.

I did find the driving relaxing but as regards wild camping, forget it, use the campsites. The cost for sites sometimes worked out dearer than a nights stay at motels, and if I ever did it again I think I would go for flydrive and booked motels in advance.

You could try looking at Virgin Calafornia USA brochure for info.

I think you will find the visit fantastic, but pricey. Good Luck

I spent 6 months touring the USA in a motorhome a few years ago. We didn't book any sites in advance, and used campsites in National and State Parks, in preference to the commercial KOA type campgrounds. The National and State Park campgrounds invariably had electric hook-ups, firepits, and picnic tables on each pitch and were generally good sized pitches in picturesque settings. The commercial campgrounds that we saw were normally regimented rows of RVs all parked about 10 feet from each other.
I kept a diary while we were there and so if you need any information on prices of campgrounds, or any other info, just get in touch.
