Today I went to a local LPG car filling station and got my 6kg propane bottle filled. He screwed an adaptor into the bottle then put the car filling hose on and filled it up.  It only cost me £3.95. I usually pay around £9.00. I can't help but wonder if this is a safe procedure. I know that my two bottles are ok. But what if I had got them from a car boot, or from the council tip? I could well imagine him filling one up and it going pop!!  Is filling your LPG bottles in this way a common practice?

Hi Mark the bottle I took was a standard Calor 6kg propane.  He just screwed the adaptor in the used the same hose they were using to fill the cars.

I've not heard before of them doing this with ordinary bottles, only the re-fillable ones. I know one of the garages I use for petrol has a couple of LPG pumps now & they've stopped exchanging cylinders, wonder if they might do it this way?

Did you ask for a refill or did they suggest it?

I am surprised you found someone willing to re-fill a Calor bottle as Calor are dead against the idea and will not entertain refillable cylinders.
