Thanks for helping me so quickly

She's an old motorhome - a 92 talbot highwayman and i seem to have permently moved in to her while i continue my travelling round. Which is good -lots of freedom, no more mortgage responsibilities!.

i'm not planning on using sites all the time in an attempt to save money to prolong my travels so its just to do things like run my normal home portable tv and boil a kettle. I have looked at the cost of buying a 12v/240v tv to use. I was just wondering if there was a cheaper option rather than having to buy new kettle, new tv etc.

I have looked at invertors (and was getting mighty confused by all the different types out there) but i just didnt know if this was a good option. or whether they were liable to do any damage to my battery. Also most of them seem to plug into cigarette lighters and run off the car battery.

Does anybody out there use an invertor which plugs into the 2 pin 12v plug rather than the cigarette lighter?

Hi

Right for TV or any other low wattage item no probs, they wont have them specifically for 2 pin plugs.

Its best to wire the invertor in direct to leisure battery, and put a fuse in line (and a switch if it doesnt have one on the front.

Invertors Maplins and Sterling if your using a CRT (normal portable 14" type) get the sterling it'll cost a little more but is unlikely to cause any lines.

this will suit you for tv's and dvd's etc

Its not a good idea to use it for kettle or any heat producing device Because you would need much larger Invertor (£'s) with any normal type set up ie single 110 ah battery and charge via alternator this should not cause you any problems.

Invertor 150w either one should be sub £30

before using any device via invertor post here for comment.

Hi Girlincamper, welcome to UK Camp Site.

It would be much better to just use an ordinary metal kettle & boil it on the gas hob. I carry 2 kettles, a whistling one to use on the hob & an electric one for when we have leccy hook up.

P S My motorhome is a year older than yours and he's not old, maybe middle aged! See loads around an awful lot older.

Hi girlincamper .... welcome to Ukcs ....... to cut down on site fees - it may be worth joining the CC or C&CC they cost around £30 to join, but have 1000's of smaller sites .... some as little as £3 per night

Good luck with living in your van, would love to do that

Hi girlinacamper
I think if you can afford it,buy an inverter and a spare leisure battery, plus a solar panel not cheap but in the long run very effective way of making power on the cheap, all of these bits can be found on ebay, laptop, kettle would take very little out of you spare battery,I run my microwave off the inverter, also my van is a 1980
