1 - How often do you drive it? Once every couple of weeks is a good idea. It stops the tyres from getting a flat spot on them

2 - How often do you have the vehicle serviced? Fuel, oil and air filters changed; also clean oitl?

3 - Now here's the $64 dollar question: Have you ever had the fuel pump and injectors serviced because it sounds like this may well be the answer. If an injector is not atomising the fuel correctly it will give the symptoms that you describe.

...I dare say a good blast around the bypass every now and then, wouldn't do it any harm..

Diesel engines get far to "easy a life" in MHs...and I don't think that it does them any favours....

But of cause,a happybonzo said, the correct maintenance does help...

If it is coughin and a spluttering only now and again and its deisel could well be the EGR (exhaust gas recycling valve) which causes it to smoke really bad and run really rough then clear up and drive normal. hope this helps.

If it ~is~ a diesel, I would start with changing the fuel filter - they are generally pretty easy to do.

And again I would suspect the EGR valve. Mine started to stick open occasionally, which made it lose power, smoke horribly and make a lot of noise.

On some vans (mine's a 1999 Transit) you can simply dodge the replacement cost (£260 on mine!) by removing it and fitting a couple of blanking plates. Some engines require a remap, but mine didn't.

First thing I would do is give it a good run to clear the cylinders with a dose of RedEx diesel additive and then check the egr valve and pipe work. If the problem still persists there are many options to consider,
Have you left it standing for any length of time check for water in the fuell, fuel filter and change it.you can then run it to a local diesel injection specialist and let him check out your injectors and injection pump. Hope this helps

I wouldn't even start looking for a fault on a diesel engine until I have changed the fuel filter and at least checked the air filter. There may be a bit of an air leaking into the fuel system somewhere.

Another possibility may be a temperature sensor fault causing the heater plugs to malfunction or indeed the heater plugs themselves.

You don't say what engine if fitted to your M/H, how old it is and how many miles it has done!

P.S.

You say it runs well when it has warmed up, if the fuel consumption is unaffected and power delivery is normal there is plenty to check before chasing down an EGR valve fault......

If it runs well when hot, I would get the glow plugs checked, especially if it doesn't start as quickly as it did.
