HI, I'm trying to work up the courage to drive abroad, so I can take my dog with me to spain. I need to travel from Liverpool through france (via the eurotunnel ) eventually to Denia in Spain. As I'm a coward and also cos I get back ache if I drive more than about 2 hours, does anyone know of an internet site that I can use to plan a route with stops at campsites or aires etc on that route?? Time isn't important - doesn't matter if I take a few weeks getting there.
Vicarious Books offer a number of publications which you might find useful, as well as the site information and reviews you can find on here, of course.
French campsites generally only open May-Sept although some open for longer. May onwards there will be no problem finding campsites in France. Google 'Michelin campsite guide' for campsite guide book & 'all the aires' for guide to motorhome aires which are mainly in towns & specifically for motorhomes & should not be confused with motorway services also called aires.
You have a choice of routes, some toll all the way which will cost you well over £100 one way & other routes with less toll or no toll.
Route many would use would be Calais, Rouen, Chartres, Tours, Poitiers, Bordeaux, Bayonne, into Spain then Pamplona, Zaragoza, Teruel, Valencia, Denia. But there are other choices. France is quite motorhome friendly, nobody even bothers if you park overnight on a supermarket carpark for example.
Use the via michelin route planner but also buy large single sheet maps of both France & Spain which gives you a better idea of your actual route, also its good to have road atlases of both France & Spain.
I asked a similar question about 12 months ago. I really dont know what i was bothered about, as it was very easy driving. If you have no time limit id just set off, as Tentz says you wont have any bother finding sites. You can also skip all the tolls as you have plenty of time, and take in the scenery of the towns and villages. An ACSI book/card may prove handy though.
I'm off to Spain next wednesday, ferry the following day at 12.15, you want to join me??? but i do not stop ever 2 hours, sorry i do at least 250/300 miles a day, the only stop is to eat and use the toilet. You are welcome to tug along. we are going all the way to Benidorm.and by the way i'm in Liverpool as well.
Hi Wineciccio
thanks for your reply, it's too early for me , I'm thinking of going in may/june, but hope you have a great trip. Do you stay in Benidorm for several months? I have a place I can stay at in Oliva ( past Denia and before Valencia!) but because I have a dog, the only way for me to get there is to drive! which is why I'm building up courage to drive via france. I'm in allerton in Liverpool - are you nearby??
No mate i'm very close by to Copy Lane police station, just off Copy Lane.L30, and no i will not be staying there long, 4/5 weeks at the most, we usually go to L'Estartit but due to family events in may we decided to go out now and again after the end of may, perhaps go down to Pompei and say hallo' to my sisters.
HI again, I'm going to pompei in april, but flying and staying in portici just for a few days to see pompei and herculaneum. Did you know you can get flights from Liverpool to Naples pretty cheaply - just looked and easyjet do flight going out 14 may, coming back 21st for just under 85 quid! Anyway have a great time in Spain!
You may find Archies of use, loads of sites all over Europe, a lot of people here do. Have fun planning and you'll be fine, France is totally different for driving in than the UK, lots more space and empty roads, enjoy!
Hi mate, Portici is a nice place but i will say this only once, BEWARE of pickpockets and street urchins, they will have your trousers off and you wont even be aware of it. As for the flights ,yeah i knew, but i'm trying to organise my 65 in march and i would love to get an open rail ticket all the way home, that way we could stop on the way here and there, much more exting i think. Anyway have a nice time in Portici.
what a fabulous idea, taking your time going miles away, glad to see others have done it and have shared the knowledge
were just planning to do a wandering trip but here in the good old UK, maybe in another couple of years we'll have the time, money and courage to follow in all your footsteps or should that be motorhome miles?
Hi
I am also plucking up the courage to go to france with my dog Rebus in our new camper van, but i understand dogs have to have injections before they come back into the UK. Have you sorted that out, if so where did you find the information?
Thanks
