Veh. Hymer 644/fiat 2.8
on a recent journey the warning lights for the abs and asr components came on, at first if i switched off the ignition and then switched it back the lights would stay off. after a while though the lights came on and stayed on. the brakes are not affected at all, but i haven't tested the asr. has anyone had this problem? also where is
the unit situated that controls these functions?
any help will be much appreciated.
thanks dave
ABS/ASR systems are complex and problems are difficult to diagnose from just the warning light.
However, it's highly likely that the ECU will have logged more detailed diagnostic information. To see that you would need to get the vehicle's ECU code read.
These symptoms often seem to arise when a speed sensor on one wheel has failed or is intermittent, so the ability of the system to control braking in a skid may be compromised. Under the latest MOT rules a vehicle with these warning lights lit (or disconnected!) will fail.
On the other hand try this method and see what happens, put the ignition on, press both brake and clutch at the same time and hold for at least 30 seconds, switch off, give a few seconds and switch on again and see if the lights have gone out

And then ask yourself the question "but why did the warning light come on originally?"
If it's an intermittent problem, there's a very good chance it will return. If it does, you may not know until you hit the brakes...
Because sometime the ECU gets the wrong info from other electronic bits fitted hence the method described above which by the way was passed on to me by an expert in car computing, ok it may not work on all the cars or all of the time, but it certainly worked on my daughter's in law car.
I had the two lights come on on my Hymer 614. One of the sensors on the front wheel had gone faulty. Easy repair and didn't cost too much.
A bit more info on the fiat forum, always a good place to look.
thanks to the ones who replied, unfortunately the problem was not solved. I have now found the problem the slip ring that the ABS senses has disintegrated so I am about to fit a new drive shaft complete. it is possible to fit a new slip ring but as the engine has done 55k the thought of changing the rubber boots etc made me think a complete shaft at £66 was the best option.
thanks anyway
