I am amazed that anyone would stock up on food on the mainland, before going to the Outer Hebrides.
There are 5 Co-ops along the whole length and these not only sell Co-op branded foods but they also sell locally produced foods as well.
We spent a month travelling the 120 miles from the Butt of Lewis to Barra and we ate exceedingly well throughout that trip.
As for it being "a free holiday", well we toured with a car and caravan and by the time you pay the ferry fares for that, it is a gie expensive "free holiday".

Lovely photo, Lobey.
On the Outer Hebrides there are many of these tarred areas just off the roads which I think are used by folks who have cut and dried Peat, so that they can take their trailers in and park them when they go to collect their Peat.
Everyone uses this "free fuel" and so there are lots of areas to park up overnight for as wheeled wildcampers.
Only 'joined up' last night and can already sense an anti-motorhomer vibe. What a shame there's so much good info on here that I thought was inclusive. Perhaps I got it wrong.
I think the suggestion to 'shop local' is a bit misguided. We are all British, we can travel where we want in our country & shop where we like. If you have a motorhome its much easier just to load up at Tescos than mess about trying to stop at local shops & farm shops etc.
& no Bertie B, theres no anti motorhomer 'vibe'. As with any forum, ukcs has it share of pedants & the argumentive.
We have had motorhomes as well as all the other types of units and, for us, part of the attraction of touring is to shop locally.
Local shops especially the grocer type of place tends to stock foods that are fresher. Also local delicacies not found in supermarkets.
Supermarkets are fine for the home, monthly shop, but when we are away and cooking fresh everyday, we only take food for the first night and the following morning's breakfast. Everything else is bought where we happen to be.

Thanks for that and judging by some of the posts about robberies in Central France the hysterical too!
Back to the original query about places to go for wild camping, we drove along Loch Earn at the weekend and there are several long laybys right by the shore, on the line of the old road before it was improved, south facing and screened from the road by trees, and I couldn't see any signs prohibiting overnight stays.

You will see these signs on the A82 as you travel up Loch Lomond side, but most folks ignore these signs.
Let's face it, the only people that can move you on from such a place is a Traffic Warden or a Policeman.
Now as far as I am aware, Traffic Wardens go home at 5pm and the Police are far too busy at night to be bothered about the odd wild camper having a kip in a layby.
If I was ever questioned about sleeping in such a place, I would simply say that I had driven a long way and I was having a rest before resuming my journey. No one could object to that.
Ofcourse, whenever we did stay overnight in such a place, we would remain semi dressed and not in pyjamas, just in case.
