We are owners of a Ford Transit now converted into a very nice motor home.
We have been considering travelling around Europe.
Just for example starting from Calais tracking across to Munich putting the motor home into storage at this point and travelling home by plane.
To commence the 2nd leg of our journey firstly by plane from our local airport to Munich collecting our motor home to travel around Austria and then putting our motor home into storage at let say Genoa and returning home by plane and so on enabling us to move around and continue on with our journey and
cutting out the drive home each time and being further on our journey each time from a new point.
The trips are expected to be for 10 day stints a couple of time a year.
We obviously need to carefully co-ordinate our flights, storage and timing. Is there any one else who has
done a similar thing? and is there anything that you could advise us on what to be careful with or
watch out for.
Any advise or information is very welcome to assist us with our dream.
PS. Is it possible to Tax and MOT the vehicle in the EU instead of the UK.
If the van is over 3yrs old it needs to return to the UK every year for mot test, there is no way around this.
You can tax online & get tax disc posted on to you from a UK address & after October there will be no more tax discs so process will be easier. It will allow a new UK reg vehicle to remain abroad for first 3yrs although it would be dodgy for insurance purposes I would guess.
For your plan you will need to find an insurer with no annual limit on continental use, most limit to 60 or 90 days but Saga for over 50s will insure all year, but van with have to return to UK once a year if over 3yrs old for mot & to keep insurance definitely 'legal' it would have to return anyway.
