Hi, I'm planning to have an awning fitted to my Bailey 740 motorhome, and have been advised that I can have either a top mounted or side mounted type. When I asked which is better (as I have no idea) was told that it is what ever my preference is. Does anyone have any suggestions as to whether one has advantages or disadvantages over the other?
Many thanks.

If you are talking about a Fiamma or similar wind out one then they must be able to fix one on the side of the van or on the roof. Most motorhomes are fixed on the side of the van with through fixings into the inside, usually into lockers. Have a search for similar vans at any dealers and see what they have done.

Thanks Mike. Yes it is the Fiamma type awning that I am planning to have fitted. The dealer says that they can fit either to my unit but I was wondering if one has any advantage over the other. If not then I'll just let the price be the decider.

Thanks again.

I would have thought that the side fixed one would be the better bet as it would be easier to attach the fixings and keep them watertight. I presume that a roof mounted one would be just that and fixed through the roof.
I know which I would choose.

I would go with side fixing - gives you somewhere to attach an awning if you ever wanted to.

Thanks for the replies Mike and Magnolia. Sounds like a side fitted awning it will be then.

Thanks again.

Hi..

I'd at least check out a few online images of Bailey 740s with Fiammas, to which you prefer the look of ...

(Just had a quick look and to my eye the ones mounted "fully" above the wall-roof line look odd...Above roof line.  and I'm finding it hard to see what advantage  they'd have anyway?(..unless of cause these MHs are lower than is usual?)

Having said that, even the "wall mounted" ones seem to  "break" the roof line a little(..possibly to clear the fridge vent?)

Wall mounted

I'd be checking to see which  method they use/is recommended, if/when they are fitted from new in their factory(..that is, if  they actually fit them from new?)..

Hi Pepe,

Thanks for these links. I hadn't thought of looking for images on line. I think that these images have confirmed my choice for side mounting.

There wasn't an option to have one fitted from the factory, it was a dealer option.

Thanks again.
