Just fitted a DTUK CRD2E+ to my Autocruise Ducato 130 multijet, what a difference, much more lively and supposed to save fuel too and my insurance wasn't effected either
Took me less than half an hour to fit, highly recommended
I fitted a similar device supplied by storm tuning of paignton certainly upped the power on my 120 ducato but no difference on economy
talking to a mechanic who tunes engines for a living these fitted to the common rail only increase the pressure in the rail so it will make a difference to the power output but probably not a lot of difference to the economy it is better to get the engine re-mapped as this increases the performance throughout the whole power range .I have since sent the chip back for a complete refund as they promise and am considering re mapping I will let you know if I go ahead and what the difference is
Interesting one this. My own thoughts are that if it was as simple to improve the economy of your vehicle by just fitting a small electronic device then why don't the manufacturers of the vehicles do it?
Hi Keith, manufactures need to make their produces suitable to a lot of country's. some of these country's don't have excess to good fuel or they have hotter climate like Australian etc. A remap just adjusts the engine more to a European life. michael
Yes, I can appreciate that engines are mapped for various climates and conditions, it is the addition of various 'little black boxes' that I find a bit odd. I have seen many such devices advertised over the years for both petrol & diesel engines. I have never purchased any of these so I can't say if they work or not, and I know that some people swear by them. However I can't help thinking that if they were so good that the manufacturers would fit them an then they could 'up' the mpg claims of their vehicles.
I may be completley wrong of course and am missing out on making my vehicles cheaper to run.
hi, sorry for the delay in reply. In answer I have owned many cars, vans over the years and have had a few of them remapped. Not one showed any improvement in MPG. You just need to think about it really. some of the cheaper black boxes just allow more fuel into the engine by prolonging the injector fuelling. the result of this is a little more power but no improvement in MPG (how can it). the better boxes adjust the signals from the air intake, pedal position and temp and load being placed on the engine, and works out the best amount of fuel to use. The second box will give you more power and torque as it suits the engine more. But again MPG will not go up unless you are very very light of foot, and if you are whats the point in having the remap or the box.
I have my fiat 2.8 engine remapped to 370 torque and 180bhp. this being in a autotrail Dakota. whats it like. well before the Dakota would not hold 5th on the motorway, so it was always up and down the gearbox. now it will hold 5th all day. OK I hear you say higher gear, better MPG. well no not really, the autotrail is a large heavy unit and yes the engine is running much better the fact that I can keep in 5th also means that I can push on a bit more. so the MPG remains the same.
the big boys do make their cars cheaper to run, well some of them, but there are many factors to take into account. my BWM 525d touring as an 8 speed autobox, stop and start and returns around 45MPG all day long and I don't drive slow. my partner drives a 2lt diesel mini cooper with auto box and no stop and start. her car returns 42mpg. we took out a new mini 3 cylinder for a 200 mile test drive. BMW said it would do 68mpg. well all we could get was 40mpg. why was that. well the engine was working to hard and the manual gearbox was not so great. There are just so many factors to take into account and no little black box, or remap is going to improve MPG for so many reasons know matter what people say. they improve the engines ability to produce power that's all.michael
In the early 70's when fuel started to skyrocket, mags like practical motorist, custom car etc all had ads for various fuel saving devices. For a laugh in the pub one day, we totted up all the claims and if you bought them all your vehicle would be creating enough surplus fuel that you could sell it.
Happy days.
This subject was raised on one of the VW forums, and one of the remapping experts pointed out that there genuinely are a few areas where a remapper can get better economy than the manufacturer.
One of these is where the manufacturer is forced to sacrifice economy in some areas in order to meet emission control limits - the obvious example being NOx emissions, which the remapper can ignore, within reason.
Another is that manufacturers may sacrifice "real world" economy because they know the ~exact~ conditions under which official economy figures are measured, and so they modify the engine management to excel just under those specific conditions.
However, I think it's accepted by most people that these are only likely to have an effect at the margins. Overriding this are the rules of Physics - if the remap provides more power and the driver uses enough of that power, economy ~will~ be worse!
Cheapest way to improve performance and MPG is a light right foot and carry as little as possible when traveling. never carry any water, only enough for a brew until you get where your going, then half fill up if you intend to move on in a day or two.
I have had my MH for a couple of months now and was looking at the on-board computer whilst we were away last weekend and I came across the 'instant fuel consumption'. I started experimenting with the gears and driving speeds to see what effect it had. My MH is a Bessacarr E495, 2010, based on a Fiat 130 multijet. It has 6 forward gears and I was using 6th as a sort of overdrive.
Anyway, I found that if I cruised at 50 mph in 5th or 6th gear my mpg ranged from about 15 mpg to 21 mpg. However if I was in 6th gear and cruised at 55 mph the mpg went to up to 22 mpg to 32 mpg!
That ‘instant fuel consumption’ is a very handy device and costs nothing to fit!
I have had 3 motorhomes remapped, the last one now is a fiat trigano, last year before the remap going to Spain and back I averaged 32.6 to the gallon, this year after the remap I averaged 36.8 using exactly the same route(and same right foot) and stops there and back, so judge it yourself whether its worth it or not.
I have now had my trigano remapped talking to the engineer he was telling me a bit about the firm he usesfor his data it used to be done years ago by a firm called superchips this person left the firm and started up on his own and is now one of the biggest tuning firms worldwide .Several years ago he relocated to cornwall and runs the firm hands on from there and does occasionally keep his hanmd in with some of his customers so there must be something to be said for it as soon as I get some ecomomy figures from my van I will post on here good or bad
