Hi there. My name is Gary and I am a newbie to the site. We have just purchased a 1998 Renault Master 2.5td self build camper conversion. The chap I bought it from built it using a donor caravan for cupboards and seats etc. He has included a 40 ltr. aqua roll with pump for washing water etc. I was wondering if anybody can advise me if it is possible to fit an onboard water tank in the space above the drivers cab(inside the cab) and if so what would I need to complete the job? thanks in advance Gary

Hi Gary and welcome.
My first thought is that although it's possible, that's one helluva weight to have so high up.
First rule (not really) of caravanning, motor homing, is to keep heavy objects at floor level and over the axle.
Loads of people with self builds on here will give you better advice than I can, but watch the weight.

As above, there's the weight (and weight transfer) issue, but also if you fit one underneath (where most onboard water tanks are fitted) in the event of a leak, it just drips on the road, instead of on your head... Waterlogging of interior trim fittings tends to ruin them pretty quickly.

Think of that water moving about at that height when you're travelling, one sharp corner & over you go!

If you fit a 100 litre water tank above the drivers cab you are putting around 100 kgs – imagine a 16 stone person - above your head.

Please consider another option for your tank.

I would stick with the Aqua Roll Gary. Unless you can find the room for an under slung tank, the space inside the van can be put to much better use.

I'd ask - why do you want to fit a tank ? Our friends with a vintage campervan don't use their on-board tank at all - they use the big water cannister from their tenting days which is smaller than the aquaroll. Fewer issues with preventing bacteria, no need to drain it at winter, using it for drinking without boiling it is ok; they use the site dish-wash and site toilets & showers, or boil up what they need. Do you have a hot water tank + heater? If not, there's even less point fitting an onboard tank. I'm with the previous advisers, I'm not at all keen on your suggestion.

Hello all. well it looks like my idea was not a good one..thanks very much for all your advice, much appreciated. I do have a carver water heater Fiona. I think I will stick with the aqua roll for a while and see how that goes. Once again thank you all.
