We've recently bought a 2003 Elddis Autoquest 200. Several websites advertise mirror protectors at around £95 a set. Are they worth it or are they just a solution in search of a problem?

How often do mirrors actually get damaged?

Has anyone here had an accident where the mirror protectors actually prevented damage to the mirrors that would otherwise have cost them substantially more than the cost of the protectors?

Thanks

Vehicle mirrors are expensive to replace so if they save serious damage you could argue that they are a good idea. Did read somewhere that one person said that such a cover caused problems for the exterior temperature sensor which is usually on the bottom of one of the mirrors because water collected in the cover.

meaning you could wait forever before damaging your mirrors or you could be unlucky.
your camper is 13 years old and probably on its original mirrors.
you can also buy replacement mirrors for £35 on e bay so no i dont think its worth it, but its not my £95.

Hit anything hard enough and the protector won't help. What it will help reduce is paint damage if you get too close to overhanging foliage, walls, posts etc.

I thought that these mirror guards were really meant to benefit the "brittle", long armed, all-singing, all-dancing X250 mirrors? (..which were supposedly 200-300quid to have replaced?).

For the previous model Ducato/Boxer, I personally wouldn't bother.

Are the mirror casings on the >3006 models less robust than ony 2003 model?

Hi Michael..

I've never owned a pre-X250 Ducato /Boxer but those on the X250 MH we had did appear more "brittle" than those on the previous Transit and the subsequent Renault Master we had. They also seemed a lot bulkier..and they also "stuck out" more...

I'm not even sure that these mirror guards were considered an issue 'til the long armed X250 mirror came about.?..as it does only ever seem to be the X250 that get clacked in any numbers?

..maybe that's because a lot of X250 MHers are.. *cough*..older drivers, with little or no experience of anything bigger than their Honda Jazz!

(That was a joke, before anyone piles in with  "I drove  Scammell trucks for 40 years" type responses.. )
