Something to do with sleeping on the floor with the wind whistling around your ears,feeling damp and horrible when you wake up,struggling to keep you and the kids warm huddling around a fan heater wondering if the tent will stand up to the wind howling through the trees.
Dashing to the loos in the middle of the night in the pouring rain,trying to get the tv working cos the are moaning while you cook on a wobbly camping stove.
Our last memories of camping and a very good reason why we changed to a caravan and still go where and when we want.
More or less as above, changed to a caravan in 1994 after a dismal camping experience in the Lake District. The calendar said it was April, more like Janaury, I have never been so cold.
Following a house move, we found ourselves without a motor caravan or caravan. So we packed 2 folding bikes and a small tent into our little car and headed for France. We had just as much fun as we do in our current campervan/caravan combo. Why all this competition between the "genres" ? Live and let live. Enjoy yourselves whilst youre still breathing in and out.

At the weekend I was camping in the New Forest with Dubs in the Forest and each evening was chatting outside looking up at the stars round a table with friends until 11.30. I would never do that if I wasnt camping. Thats just one reason why I camp...fresh air and friendship

We have camped in many ways, Tent, Caravan, Canal BOAT, and now motorhome. We go where we want to go, when we want to go and with whom we want to be with. Nothing in any of the ways we have travelled about is regimented. We eat, sleep, and play when we chose to. We eat out, we eat in. We get wet, we have a sun tan, we are free as a bird. Free as the air we breath. If we hurry we will not be late. If we slow down we can dream along. We like cycling, walking, fishing, drinking, and love to talk to anyone who is passing or will listen. We like to be free.
The op is a student doing research for an A level project. They may well find that the easy option of posting on internet forums for info does not really bring the desired results unless they are able to interact with posters taking the trouble to answer their question.
sushiroll, there are as many reasons to go camping as there are members of UKCS plus the various Clubs that some of us join. Thousands, in other words. You need to be much more specific - your question is far too open. And you may get more helpful answers if you focus your question at a particular section of this massive group of us - people your age / on their own / with dogs / unwaged or whatever. So - what are you trying to get out of this exercise? We're willing to help, but we also don't want to waste our own time and yours.
