You are indeed in the "right place". There are many people using Transit conversions. There are some very knowlagable owners on here who will be able to advise you.
As to your specific questions, cheaper than what?
I would also say that it seems that conversions always take a lot longer to do than expected. In fact I think most are used as a rolling projects and are rarely ever fully finished.

Many thanks , Steven
Cheaper than just using the van as it is - as a sort of solid 'tent', really ! I just wondered what difference it would make to insurance, ferry costs etc. if we put a window or two in it, for instance.
About it taking a long time - we don't really have much time before the next trip, so it probably won't happen immediately. Thanks for the warning !
Look at this site for more specific info Self Build Motorhome
There are many problems with insuring a home built conversion, especially the time when its in between a van & a conversion. On the upside you get to understand about what goes into a good built van, like Steven said they almost never get finished as you always find something you can add or make better. I did a cheap conversion on a Renault Trafic which I only intended to be for a year or two that was about 8 years ago & one day I am sure I will decide that it's finally finished
