Am considering allowing a mature acquaintance of mine to use our Y reg. 2 berth motorhome for a few days.
My feeling is that he should add my vehicle to his fully comp policy and guarantee any excess, in a separate agreement, to comply? Any advice welcome

That's how you will ruin a good friendship, tell your friends, that if he wishes to try out motorhoming/campervanning to go out and hire one for a weekend and go with him to advice him on how everything works. that's what I did with friends down south more than 30 years ago and we are still best of friends.

Agreed, you are already arguing about insurance, & this before he has returned it dirty & scratched.

Fyi, he cannot add your motorhome to his own comprehensive car insurance. He can take out a new policy for your vehicle in his name or you can add him to your insurance as second driver.

I lent my MH to my neighbour for a long weekend. Just rang my insurer and got him added, which he was happy to pay for.

It all depends how much you value your pride and joy. If you treat it like a works van then no problem otherwise avoid lending even to the best of friends.

That part's fine. The problems happen when there's an accident resulting in an excess to pay and a loss of no claims resulting in increased premiums for several years.

For me it's like lending money. I would only lend money to people I'm very close to, and only if I can afford to never have it returned. I would only lend my car to somebody if there was a genuine need and I was happy to personally stomach the cost of the potential consequences.

I loaned a tent to a clode friend once, and it came back with quite a few of the bedroom hooks and a couple of guy lines somehow torn off (discovered at my next holiday, not told by friend) - some people just don't take the same care of things when it's not their own. Luckily it was only a cheap tent, and still functioned fine, but I won't be lending anything of value to that particular friend again.

We have had our campervan for 25 years and numerous people (both family and friends) over the years have asked if they could borrow it.

The answer has always been the same sorry but no.

Thanks very much for taking time to respond folks. Lots of sound advice. Think the consensus is "don't do it", which I'm going to take
