Just got a new 10kg safefill gas bottle, what lpg (propane) do I use to fill it with & where do I get it from? Can't seem to find anywhere locally
Thanks for any replies
You fill refillable bottles at autogas pumps ie pumps used to fill lpg powered cars. Main road service stations often have autogas pumps. Look on Shell/BP/Esso etc websites. They will have service station finders to find pumps in your area.
Mark, I have a Gas-it tank fitted in my locker. Google for garages with LPG in your area. Filling up can be daunting the first time as it's different from topping up the car! The pump head locks on to the filler inlet and there can be a delay from squeezing the trigger to gas actually coming out particularly in cold weather. The other problem is that the level gauge on the tank doesn't work, a common problem, but you can't overfill you just don't know how much gas you have left. Oh, when you release the fuel pump trigger there's a release of gas pressure, a bit frightening first time. Just think though, it's a third of the price of exchange cyclinders. A worthwhile investment so good luck.
When we looked at getting a refillable system some years back, the "lpg station finder" websites were woefully inaccurate and out of date, even then.
Also you may(WILL) find that some service stations won't allow you to refill it because it is a "loose" cylinder..
(Morrison's had an official "ban" at one point, although in reality it was reportedly very patchy..)
Unfortunately, this approach has probably come about because of the folk that have been using cheapie adapters(obtained online)to refill/top-up non-user fillable "exchange" cylinders..
(although when ever this topic is raised on forums, those that do it will always swear that "they" know better..)
Thanks for your answers. The Safefill map doesn't show anything in my area south Essex I have asked at the nearest lpg garage but they say not allowed to fill stand alone bottles, maybe I should just go and try to fill it there & see if they stop me
By you, is there not somewhere that supplies the trade or maybe stocks the likes of welding gases etc..?
..because I know there is(was!) a "trade" gas outlet 'round our way that used to also refill "re-fillable" lpg cylinders...?
Hi Pepe63
Thanks again for the link again a bit out of date. I will try just turning up at a Bp pg garage & see if they let me fill it there.
I will update when done ut could be after Easter.
First try at getting the bottle filled in a local Shell garage, all hooked up ready to fill & guy comes out & says am not allowed to fill any standalone bottle in a garage.
Did you buy this cylinder new, from Safefill?...if you did I'd playin' holly hell that they'd sold something that you're finding very difficult to get refilled("legitimately" and consistantly anyway).
What I have read several times on various forums(on here as well, I think) is that to overcome this, folk have been cobbling their Safefill bottle to an external filling point..(hose/fittings, possibly even a *change-over valve etc, *so it didn't need to be disconnected to fill?), so that the bottle stays secure in gas locker.
I seem to recall someone contacting Safefill(again a forum discussion) about this mod' and they advised against it.
..and if you can fire the Safefill cylinder back at 'em and get the money back, all the better.
Because if you can't refill it now, when you have the time to mess about in an area you know well, what it's going to be like when you want to refill when you're away on your hols?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
The problem with Safefill bottles (AFAIK) is that, although they have a cut off at 80% full, they look like the 'Mickey Mouse' adaptors that people sell on auction sites.
I understand you will have to open the door to the gas locker to make your fill and that's when the garages get the heeby jeebies 'Thinking' you have an ordinary bottle.
That's why most folk go for the Gas-it or Gaslow system as they have the filler point OUTSIDE the locker. The garages assume you are filling up for propulsion, not habitation.
------------- How come when some people visit the fountain of knowledge, they only gargle!!!
This is what I got back from Safefill
Unfortunately, checking our refill map, we do not have any appointed refills close to your postcode. If you were to go on 'mylpg' they have a comprehensive list of all the LPG suppliers in your area but unfortunately, as you have already found, we cannot guarantee that they will fill for you, at the moment.
We are however fairly sure that the policy of filling portable cylinders is soon to change so your problem will be resolved. We cannot say exactly when this will be but we are hopeful within the next few months
🙂Sorry for the delay, found a BP garage that lets you fill up, about 8 miles away price 67.9p per litre. Saving Roughly £1.34 per litre on a 6kg calorlite (12 litres).
It would take about 9 refills to get your money back from buying a safefill 10kg cylinder. After that you are saving approximately £17 per refill 🙂
So happy bunny for now
We have never had an issue refilling our 10kg bottle. We normally do this when out and about as you can probably find a campsite not far from a refill station.
Many garages will not let you fill a refillable gas bottle if it's fitted in a canavan/motorhome there is a fitting that allows filling that is on the outside which cost! The problem is you can buy a fitment for a Calor bottle that fills it and it's possible to overfill not recommended that is what concerns the garages over filled bottles can explode the refillable bottles cannot be overfilled
The fitting kit for refillable gas bottles can be bought on eBay don't take mutch fitting and the garages let you fill no bother
I have not got one by the time I fill up with fuel they don't seem to bother about my gas being filled
