Years ago we used to have a Talbot Exprees campervan conversion.As far as i can remember it was an autosleeper conversion and it was comfy and easy to drive. So recently Ive been thinking how nice it would be to get a much newer one. Unfortunately all vehicles seem to be diesel now and I cant stand the smell.So can anyone advise me on getting the newest used petrol vehicle of similar dimensions.Oh and the icing on the cake id like to be able to put aircon in it.
Best of all would be something like a Chausson 02 with a petrol engine and aircon install but I dont think it exists.

We too, used to have a petrol Talbot Excalibur, ours was coachbuilt.
There are some petrol VW variants which may suit your needs. I would Google petrol VW motorhomes and van conversions. If you are thinking of spending more then there is a petrol version of our Nissan NV200 available. You can get it it with aircon fitted and even an automatic version. Sussex Campervans make it.

Just realised that the Chausson 02 is a coachbuilt.
Try a Compass Calypso based on a VW T4? There are others available.

All the Bongo and Frendie camper-vans that I have seen have been Petrol, obviously imported from Japan were I believe they don't do much in the way of Diesel.

I used to have various petrol powered vans, and you could almost watch the fuel gauge go down as you drove.
I how have a diesel campervan and unless my nose is defective, there is no smell whatever from it. The only smell is from the Eberspacher heater - which I don't use because it's too noisy.

Unless you want a new van, I would suggest a Euro4 diesel which generally have no DPF to worry about, but also qualify for the German environmental zones.

I infer that you're planning to holiday in warm places, and Diesel is often cheaper abroad. If you wanted to holiday in the UK, you'd want a heater - not A/C

I agree with you, Captain! Our van conversion in a diesel and there is no smell at all (apart from my husband....only kidding). I know what the OP means though, I remember diesel vehicles did used to smell pretty bad! But I'm talking back in the 80s....

We had a petrol MH in the USA in 2000, 7.5 litre engine, and did 15000 miles in 6 months at - - wait for it - -6 MPG! Of course fuel was really cheap there at that time

Thanks. That's a bit small for me but a great link. It's good to see that at least one company can think outside the box and has dared to go against the diesel wave that tricked many motorists into thinking diesel was a greener alternative.

Why would anybody want a petrol motorhome when it costs so much more in fuel? Can't say I've noticed any smell. If you can smell diesel you have a leak that needs fixing.

Hi.
I'm fairness, although I may agree with your "tricked" comment in relation to car drivers, I very much doubt that anyone has ever chosen a diesel motorhome because they believed it was "greener"..
They only "chose" diesel engines in so much as that's what the vast majority of commercial vehicles were, and still are, powered by..

If someone is looking for a small, possibly multi-use vehicle (that'll likely be used in LEZs etc?) then I can see the sense in a petrol..but for larger vehicles, for now diesels are still the only realistic option.
(and I wouldn't bank on petrol vehicles not being hit with "bans" of one sort or another in the future anyway...)

Diesel IS greener. They produce less Co2 per mile than an equivalent petrol.
But they are not as good for us humans because they produce more particles that we breathe in.

So, take your pick.. do you like the planet? Or people best?

Cost isn't everything. We love the sound of our Dodge 2500 V8. 19mpg isn't so bad, it climbs hills & passes most other campers.
