Our van is coming up to nearly 13 years old and getting quite rusty underneath. I wondered if any other owners have this problem and the best way to deal with it. We really don't want to change the van so underseal seems the way forward. I've read that I cant have the rust sandblasted because of the brake pipes etc. I have contacted a Waxoil centre and they quoted £500 to treat it but do they just spray the Waxoil over the rust and does this stop it? I have researched this quite a lot but a lot of conflicting information. Any advice is more than welcome.
I did a car with wax oil.It was put on over the rust but,if you have any thick rusty bits or flakes make sure you remove them.I bought a gallon of the stuff and put it in a hand garden spray bottle it worked perfect
From experiencee, Waxoyl gets my vote. If you are still fit and agile, you can prepare the underside first by powerwashing off any salt and organic mud but make sure it dries really well naturally before waxoyling. Wirebrush off any flaking paint and/or heavier rust deposits. When I restored old cars, I have undersealed AND then waxoyled over that. A lot of work though.Waxoyl will stop light rusting from getting worse but it must be dry before application.

I have used Bilt Hamber Dynax on my 10 year old Saab.There was only surface rust on a couple of cross members but I did them and inside the box sections and other parts.
It comes in big aerosols with a handy injector tube(or you can buy a 5 litre can).
It scores highly in tests (In Practical Classics Magazine) and seems to do a good job.It does contain rust treatment,just clean off loose stuff then apply.

I did my Land Rover Defender with waxoyl and it just peeled off after 2 years with even more rust underneath. My mate just had his Nissan Navara done professionally with something similar to waxoyl (it smelled the same) that was supposed to be good, and guess what? 6 months later and it's peeling off. I told him it would but he'd got taken in with the sales BS.
In my experience the best thing that stops rust dead in it's tracks is white grease, available in aerosol from eBay. Blast it on, it never sets or dries, just goes dirty, if you scratch a bit off after a couple of years it's like the day you sprayed it underneath.
Waxoyl may well be ok on a brand new or spotlessly clean vehicle but it's a waste of money otherwise.
Personally I'd be inclined to change the vehicle before it gets to bad, once it gets hold it's game over. If it's bad when not even 13yrs old what's it going to be like in 3 or 4yrs time? Our Bessi is 13yrs old & like new underneath, yes I'd get rid pronto!

Atkin: Yes as you can see above - there is some conflicting information!
Having had 3 vans Waxoyl undersealed, we can only recommend it!
HOWEVER ... as with most things proper preparation is everything to avoid disappointing results.
Ours have been done by our local Fiat main dealer (for about £145 each time.) who have the experience & knowledge for correct application. E.g.
1. Steam clean.
2. Allow to fully dry.
3. Only apply in warm weather.
Above process can mean leaving the van at the garage for up to 3 or 4 days.
Note our vans have been up to 4 years old when first done and we have felt that the investment was well worthwhile - making us feel good (I love to see a clean bottom ...) but especially appreciated when selling or part-exchanging the old van.
All that said - on a van 13 years old it may be 'past-it' anyway?

I cleaned and reproofed an old LandRover S3, put it up on a pair of ramps wire brushed chassis both with a drill mounted and hand.
Bit of welding where needed, then coat of rustproof primer then black waxoyl.
Filthy job but it lasted,the beast was used for greenlaning!
They do have good ground clearance which helped.
There are companies which do proper cleaning and reproofing.
I think one is called Before and After Rustproofing.
Have a google or buy or borrow a Land Rover mag, when I used to read them there were ads for that service.
