Hi
We are looking to buy our first motorhome.
We have seen in private adverts that their motorhome comes with "air suspension". This is something we had never heard of. What are the pros and cons and are we better to go with or without?
Many thanks
Hi..
Although a few "well heeled" motorhomers may have opted to have "full air suspension" from new-ish(*so that it totally replaces the existing springs etc all 'round), usually when "air suspension" is mentioned, it just means that it has additional air assistors(bellows,if you like) fitted to the rear axle...and being "air", they are adjustable, either by an onboard compressor or, as we had with ours, just valves under the rear wheel arches.
They can get fitted for a number of reasons-
To help stop excessive body roll, to gain additional rear *ground clearance(*as it was in our case) or to form part of a possible GVW "up-rate".
Although we thought our previous MH "handled"(for want of a better word ) well enough in standard form, it was far better(tauter, more stable)once they were fitted.
Having said that, in the scheme of things, they aren't that expensive to have fitted anyway(a DIY job in many cases), so I wouldn't let the fact that a vehicle has them sway your decision too much..
I had the air bags fitted to my Fiat Ducato PVC.. found it to be a harsh ride when I first got it, cos it sat on the bump stops. It's designed to do that so I've been told.. anyway the air bags make a big difference.
I purchased a kit (rear only) through eBay and fitted them myself. The bellows and brackets replace the bump stops. The only difficulty was working on my back under the motorhome but it wasn't an impossibilty. I can 'pump up' the ride height and the ride isn't as solid feeling as standard Fiat setting. I would recommend them.
Thank you all for your replies. We decided that air suspension wasn't an necessity for us in the end. We are now the proud owners of a 2004 fiat ducato swift sundance which had the fixed bed and the separate shower we required.
