Hi. I have recently bought a little van to convert into a camper i have a fair sized uk places to do list but i'd love to visit Norway.
I have done some searching and can't seem to find any ferries that go direct to Norway nor Denmark?
I'm hoping to visit Tromoy, Arendal and then Prestkolen and Flam.
I'd be grateful for any info , tips and advice
Thanks Jason.
I don’t think there are any direct ferries from UK any more. I had a work colleague who slept in his campervan in the locked office car park; his family lived north of Oslo, he’d fly home when it was cheap. To get the campervan back he had to get the ferry over the Channel & drive the long way around.
But there may have been changes since then.
The alternative is to fly (Edinburgh to Oslo direct is less than 2 hours) & do some lightweight camping. You could maybe take the Hurtigruten - it’s just a big ferry, you used to be able to sleep on deck for free; but that may have changed too.
Hi Jason, I've driven there twice and you need to drive up through Denmark to Hirtshalls, and ferry to Norway, from memory Christiansund just SW of Oslo. It's cheaper to get the toll done on your credit card before you go for all the tunnels. Check out the website "visit Norway".

There was an interesting article in the latest edition of MMM (Motorhome Monthly Magazine) about a trip to Norway which you might find worth a read. You should be able to get it in WH Smiths or it can be read online.
I wouldn't bother staying at Flam (its a bit of a one horse town) Look at Voss, a good camp site walking distance from town and you can get the "Norway in a nutshell " trip from there. It includes a coach trip up to the fjord , boat trip to Flam where you can browse the tat shops, then get the train up the mountain to connect to the main line back to Voss. It is VERY expensive in Norway, but a trip not to be missed

I don’t know if the exchange rate has improved, but a few years ago we found a bottle of beer there cost the same as a bottle of wine here. A standard bottle of wine there cost the same as a malt whisky here. No, didn’t check the price of a bottle of whisky.
Great scenery though, clean, and friendly people.
Norway and the Fiords are one of my favourite destinations, and we have been lucky enough to cruise them several times over the years. It used to be possible to sail from Newcastle to Bergen, then pick up one of the local ferries to various destinations Up the coastline as far north as Alta. The best time of year to travel is during June and July, when the daylight hours are at their longest, and the weather is at its mildest. During the winter months the daylight hours are very short, visibility is often poor, and many of the tourist areas and hotels are closed down. Tbh, it was mainly Motorhomes that we spotted on the roads and campsites, very few Caravans if any, but also a few sites aimed at backpackers and bunk barn type of accommodation.
For us, the best scenery and experiences were gained from sailing the Fiords, and stopping off at the small towns and villages en-route to the North cape. The Midnight Sun is quite spectacular, the waterfalls stunning, and the North cape and Finmark fascinating to see the lifestyle of the nomads and their herds of reindeer, living in teepees during the Summer months, and Log cabins during the Winter.
Like others have said, the cost of living is rather expensive, and we actually found it cheaper to pic up a cruise ship in the U.K. with an onboard all inclusive deal, than trying to travel around the country independently.

In our experience nothing beats driving a motorhome though the magnificent scenery of Norway. We've been around it twice spending over 6 weeks in 2002 and again in 2012. From the Fjord region, up the west coast and to Nordkapp; it is spectacular. Envious friends (no motorhome) who saw our photos booked a fjord cruise and were disappointed they didn't see it from all our perspectives.
