I need some advice please from anyone who has ever had their Romahome sills welded successfully! My C15 failed it’s mot on corroded sills and needs 2 replacements welded. The welders I have talked to have pointed out the proximity of the fibreglass body to the metal for welding and obvious fire risk if they were to weld from the outside & so far have declined to do the work. (One bodywork guy commented - “I don’t know anyone who would touch that!”)

The last bodywork restorer I spoke to said if I stripped away the inside under the seats/storage areas forward of the wheel arch he’d be able to weld. Has anyone had to do this? How easy is it to gain access to sill area from inside the van?
He suggested another option from the outside would be to cut a section of fibreglass out above the sill area then re-patch it with fibreglass after welding but told it wouldn’t look pretty & I’m loathe to do that as the ‘pod’ is the best looking bit of the van (it’s a1991 vintage)

Anyone with similar situation & experience of having sills welded so close to plastic? Any advice/stories greatly appreciated

Have a look at the Smallmotorhomes forum. It specialises in Romahomes and other small vans.

At 30 years old, it makes me wonder what they might find behind the rotten sills, I think this could turn into a costly repair.

A while ago, and not Romahome but our body shop found our rotten sills were full of builders foam. They’d never seen the like.
After the sills, it was the rusted seat belt fixings that failed the MoT. Then it was the floor pan. The joys of getting a cheap old motorhome!

Many years ago when I used to work on vehicles, sills were one of the most common MOT failures. I saw all manner of things, including old newspaper and/or chicken-wire packed with filler. Sometimes when someone brought a car in to me for a pre-MOT check I used to run a magnet over the sills and other common rust points on that particular vehicle type.

Hi don't suppose you still work on Romahomes do you. My 1979 C15 needs welding on its undercarriage, etc etc. Classic car garage took pictures for me. They were too expensive. Trying to decide if we spend money getting her sorted or bite the bullet and move her on. Looking for someone who would like to take her on, time not a problem. Cath x

Sorry, last time I worked on motor vehicles your Romahome was probably still in its infancy. I left the motor trade and became a train driver, and retired altogether several years ago.
