Be careful with the hidden t&cs on UK sims. So yes it might be a good idea to buy a local sim, but you may need to use/set-up a UK proxy via this.

We have a Three sim that gives us unlimited data in UK and is great for streaming (assuming there is a signal onsite).
But when we used it in France in the summer we found out only when we got locked out of using data, that we can only have 20GB in Europe, so this lasted us about a week. It does of course think that you are in the UK so you can still stream bbc/netflix etc, but with the data limitation!

Despite much arguing with Three when we were in France, this is apparently in the T&Cs but I cannot find any mention of it. So will need to get local sim next time.

There are many options for data on the move nowadays and a while back there was a thread about the Muama Ryoko coupled with a Flexiroam sim

As a completely portable router which could be coupled with a sim card which is operable in any country at home and abroad, this may well offer a good solution.

Thanks for reply
I did know about the 20GB
supposedly fair use abroad clause it seems most companies have this I have seen one that allows 25GB and have heard of a superdrug one that people are reporting as unlimited but I somehow doubt that I think may supergrugs may be having problems capping it I have been looking at the Smarty sim 30GB for 10 rolling monthly contract cancel at anytime it does have the 20GB cap a month for abroad though but that would not be enough to use as a main broad band supplier for us in the uk, fine for abroad as we dont use that much when abroad

Thanks for those links Mart, I shall have a good look at them my son has just told me to be careful of some deals ar they are for M phones only and if they suspect their sim is being used in a mifi they will throttle the the download speeds.

Obviously I am looking at the home broadband as its costing me 18.73 for a years offer but that is due to end next month, and EE appear to be offering a data sim of a 100GB a month for 20 for a years contract obviously having the ability to go anywhere and have my own BB for 20 a month looks good to me

Three and Smarty are the same company, they both have a fair use policy which limits you to 20gb when abroad, lots of people saying VOXI are good value and they're website states you can use your data abroad as if at home but they are part of vodafone who also have a fair use policy but theirs is 25gb per month so unsure how much of this you'll actually be able to use,
still 25% better than 3 though

VOXI

Aye - Three's unlimimited advanced UK package only gives 20gb abroad. I say 'only' - never used more than 10gb!
