As for the French sites, they seem to be converting from the reversable Schuko plug/socket to either those with a protruding earth pin or the BS4343 industrial plug/socket as in use in the U.K.

The reverse polarity issue has largely been dealt with by fitting double pole breakers in UK caravans. Houses etc still use single pole.

DP breakers mean that the fault is fully isolated. The EU just don't bother with polarity and always use DP.

We still have one small problem which is we use 13 Amp plugs and sockets and these have a fuse and switch in the live only. So if you isolate a piece of equipment by switching the socket off, the isolation and fuse will isolate either the live or the neutral depending upon the polarity of the supply. Of course if the breaker trips both will be isolated.

It's vital to unplug if you want to work on something and not rely upon the switch.

That is true. The regulations are getting stringent in Australia in as such insisting on the installation of double pole RCD and breakers for floating earth generator use and approved extra protection being present if downrated leads (the protection being installed on the lead itself) are used to connect up.

Provided only one class1 appliance is used at a time the it is extremely unlikely that you can receive a shock on a generator with a floating neutral.
Unless the generator has been modified to connect earth to the neutral an RCD won't operate if only one appliance is used or there are 2 faults.

RCD's mainly operate by comparing the current flows in the live and the neutral wires. Any marked differences of around 30mA are picked up and amplfied to operate the trip mechanism. There were voltage operated RCD's but these have been superseded as there have been problems with alternative shunt to earth paths causing the operating voltage to fall. One way of causing current operated RCD to trip is to connect a shunt path around the RCDs search coil in One of the leads.

This explains the operation of portable generators and when an RCD should be used.
