we have an S reg renault traffic campervan. Because of my 2 young grandchildren, I would like to make sure they are both seatbelted. The only way I may be able to do this, is to swap the front single passenger seat into a double. Do you think this would be possible given we cannot find any double front passenger seats prior to 2001
Welcome to UKCS.
I don’t know what your conversion is like: they’re not all the same. No front facing rear seats? I’m not a mechanic, but adding a seat belt means structural work to fix it to the vehicle body. Ditto changing the front passenger seat to a double. You also have to tell your insurance that you’ve modified the vehicle.
I hate to say it, but I think you’ve bought the wrong vehicle; or if the grandchildren came after you bought it, it’s maybe time to get a different campervan now your requirements have changed.
It might be worth asking at a campervan converters, they replace van seats during the conversion, so will know what is possible. Don't expect it to be cheap.
Apologies if I read this wrongly..........
When you say 'we have', I assume there are two of you, so if you want 2 seats for your grandchildren, that implies you may need 4 belted seats.
Since you can only have a max of 3 in the front, you need another seat in the van. It might seem a better solution to have a double seat there.
I also echo the points that Fiona makes. A van specifically made with 4 seats would be ideal, though maybe not feasible.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
Also think you need to contact a campervan conversion company. They will be the best to know what is possible and practical.
We've a Vivaro so same make as you did it ever have a double seat in the front ? Ours did but was changed to a single. So has fixating points if we ever wanted one put back.
What set up do you now have in the back?
I assume you don't have a rock and roll type seating in the back?
If you have with right retro fitting seat belts can be added. But will need a fair bit of work to bring it up to spec. It may well be cheeper to have a new one fitted that meets the spec like we have.
we also have only two seats in the front but as we have belts in the back that are tested and to standard so can carry 4 legally.
As like others have said what ever option you take it wont be cheep.
