My wife and I are renovating a campervan and have 2 dogs that will be traveling with us. We want to get 2 crates or a double crate for them to keep them safe whilst traveling. We've been looking at crash approved crates and they are VERY expensive. We want to get a crash approved one so we know the dogs are safe, but are also wondering whether it's necessary. The crates will be positioned under the bed in the middle of the van, so it will never have direct impact if there is a crash. The crates will also be cushions under the bed and next to storage units, so it's not like they will be able to move around.
Any advice on this topic? We would choose a normal crate if we knew it was safe. We're unsure and are looking for advice from people with experience traveling with dogs in their campervan.
Hi, we've always used a folding fabric travel crate for our spaniel. Sits quite happily in it between the bench seats in our moho and on the back seat in the car. How safe they would be in a crash I have no idea and don't want to get in the situation to find out. But it works for us this last 5 years.
Folding canvas crate for us too (series of spaniels). It has to fold away & get out of the way at night. Must be tiny dogs for the crate(s) to fit under the bed!
Key thing is to secure the crate(s) against moving, tied or hitched with a carabiner onto something like a bed leg, wedged isn’t enough: if you brake suddenly, the crate could pitch over with the dogs weight & the dogs would get spooked at the very least. If you’re in a crash, an unsecured crate could hit you from behind & do you damage. TBH, if the crate itself has direct impact inside the vehicle, nothing will protect the dogs & you’ll probably be a gonner too or in hospital - who’s going to take care of them then?
I forgot to say - welcome to UKCS, this topic crops up regularly & there are plenty of ideas if you Search this Forum (& others eg Equipment, Life in General).
Thank you both! We have 2 small dogs, 8kg and 10kg so under the bed is the perfect spot. We're looking at crash approved crates that fair super well in an accident, but they're so dang expensive! We're looking at a double crate for both of them and it's around 665. You should see the after photos of these crates in serious crashes. One of the photos showed a car that clearly turned upside down and the car was a wreck, however the crate was still fully in tact. I guess that's why it's so expensive! I will look at the other threads too to see if I can gather some insight there. If non-crash approved crates could still keep them safe we may go that route, but if not we'll probably get a crash-approved one just to be safe.
Previous posts mostly about soft crates, so not as popular a topic as initially thought.
Those crash ones are eye wateringly expensive, and personally I couldn't justify spending that sort of money.
I love our two dogs and they go on all touring holidays.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
