IIRC, A399 from S Molton (A361 Jct) is OK, A39 is OK towards Lynton, but the B4234 where you turn off towards the town starts to get more of an issue as hillier and narrowing and you start finding some roads off it to parts of Lynton prohibited to over 7.5T and Caravans. The hills around there are notorious, with some having a reputation as clutch wreckers! - In the opposite direction, going downhill, somewhat more testing of how good your brakes are than any MOT test ever was!!!!
Never taken anything bigger than a car into town, but don't recall it looking too MH friendly from memory! It's pretty narrow, winding and steep hills in places! Had to turn the A/C OFF on partners little car for it to have enough guts to pull away from standing start on one hill as I recall! - it'd never struggled elsewhere before!
Others with a more recent knowledge and maybe even experience (good or bad!) of MH's in Lynton may be along with better info.
You don't say what MH you have (size wise!), and no idea if familiar with the area, so usual caveat about Devon lanes - they are unforgiving! Many hedgerows are atop high earth banks (a feature of Devon!), so LITTLE scope of edging off the tarmac to squeeze past oncoming large vehicles. Depending on when the hedge cutters were last out, much overhanging foliage protruding into road, and low hanging trees to be encountered.
I'd recommend a dry run on Google Street View on the near approaches to Lynton and the town itself.
Hi Monty15, thanks for the info. My m/h is only 6m long. I’ve travelled south Devon coast but not the north. I should have stated that I’m staying at a site just south of Lynmouth so won’t need to go into or thro the town. I’ve been made aware of the famous Lynton Hill 🙈🙈. It was just whether the A399 was m/h friendly or whether best to travel the extra miles by using the A39. Thanks again 👍
A399 from South Moulton is used by lots of caravans and motorhomes regularly. I have used it myself towing many times. A bit narrow and twisty in places, but just drive with caution as what might be coming the other way.
