Hi all. We have recently bought ourselves a small motorhome and subsequently taken a few trips away. We have noticed that other motorhomers appear to be waving as we pass, is this a thing?

Steve.

Not a waver myself, however, I believe it used to be a common practice to wave at other motorhomers in passing.

I used to go camping in the mid 60s with my parents in their VW campervan & it was very unusual to see others “like us” & yes, we’d raise a hand to the other vehicle. Not an enthusiastic wave, as such.
We’ve had a small MH for over 20 years, replacing a tent. Yes, we still acknowledge others the same way, but with caveats - not across dual carriageways, for example. It’s becoming less common. Do it or don’t, personal choice.
Motorcyclists used to acknowledge others with a raised hand: has that stopped too?
It’s polite to acknowledge the other vehicle that’s pulled into the passing place on a single track road, certainly in west Scotland. It can be eye contact with a nod, or that raised hand, or lifting the index finger off the steering wheel: local variations.

We had French, German, Dutch & Belgian motorhomers wave whilst driving through France.

And in the UK

My wife thinks it's a lovely idea and she waves quite enthusiastically! I'm busy watching the road! :)

Never waved, but when we started Caravanning 50+ years ago it was common. We have the Grand Union Canal at the bottom of our garden and most Narrow Boats passing wave when we are sitting in our Garden.

We don't wave first, but will return a wave from another van.

When we took the car from Holyhead across to the south west of Ireland, lots of motorists waved. S was 17 and drove a lot, he thought it was great. Friendly folk the Irish.

Yes - wave - as long as it's safe to do so. It's friendly!
