Cable replacement seems likely, but we're guessing until or unless the OP comes back. They might have found the solution online
Haven't checked if this sort of repair or maintenance is covered by UKCS already.
Yes handbrake cable would have been a good cheap start but we ended up with new discs and shoes and brake pads with bearings. If that helps sorry for the late reply guys. When you've set the cable and handbrake ajuster at the shoes it won't work properly.
