If you do find one in the price bracket take note of the registration number and go on DVLA mot history website and check its history. A neighbour bought a 31 year old Campervan a year ago and if they had looked at the history would have found that it was a total rust bucket having welding done year after year. Some years it had only done less than 200 miles and failed the next MOT again and more welding required
As well is two words!

Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Hi,
Our friends have bought 2 motorhomes in that price bracket, 2004 reg I think, off gumtree. Both have actually been through dealers, obviously the smaller ones who maybe take part ex off the bigger dealers. Like you probably, we would be cautious going down this route but have to say our friends got decent vans for a good price & good service (only got a second one cos the first was stolen🤦🏻♀️)

Don't dis-count EBay!
A fair few smaller dealers (aka "Family run businesses"!) use it to keep the older/"less expensive" stock off their main glossy website, I guess!
We got ours this way in the end (Whilst checking numerous other sites too), but we did have to act fast... Funds in place ready to pounce... a telephone call within 10 hours of the ad going live. An agreed viewing appointment for the following day... and a 3hour drive each way to the dealer.
(Within a couple of days of our handshake, they'd had a healthy number of calls enquiring about "Our van". It wouldn't have been available for long, me thinks! To slow, suckers!)
The dealer appeared to be great to deal with face to face, but importantly to us, with on-line reviews backing up their apparent trustworthiness.
The camper itself was as near to ticking all of our specific boxes as we were ever going to find in reality. Bang on our max budget too. (We were asking a lot for what we could afford, and was fully aware that we'd need to accept compromises, and which ones we'd accept!)
10 months in, I'm tempted to say... cautiously... it went/is going well. Very well, in fact.
