Hi everyone
I have just bought a VW transporter campervan. I just wondered if anyone can recommend a suitable reversing camera suitable for this vehicle. Thank You
I’d guess they’re much of a muchness. Wing mirrors & someone at the rear (who’s in view) works for us. I know someone who blithely said he was using his reversing camera when I was calling him to stop - so he reversed into tree branches, not visible because the camera looked down.
Others here will recommend a specific camera but I’d still recommend that the passenger should be at the rear making sure you don’t prang your grey water drain on a high kerb, or reverse into a branch.
You have decisions to make before picking an actual camera.
Do you want wired or wireless? That's camera hard wired to dash screen, or a radio link between camera and screen. Some generally older systems had wireless links prone to interference and breaking up, but that's largely overcome with newer systems, but wireless link range is always a consideration.
Do you want camera ONLY operated when selecting reverse gear, or operated on demand, or full time viewing?
Do you want self contained rechargeable battery powered camera or powered from a 12v vehicle supply? Consider battery life, some are impracticably short and may not last a long journey! If vehicle powered ensure it's from a switched supply, otherwise camera can drain battery dead flat through continuous operation!
Do you want to drill fixing and/or cable holes in your bodywork, or use 'no permanent mod' magnetic (only works on steel panels!) or adhesive fixing for the camera?
Do you want DIY fit or professional fit?
Angle of view is very important, too wide an angle that captures 'everything' can be too distorted a view on screen to allow good judgement of position and distance, too narrow doesn't allow a 'complete' enough view to be confident of what's behind you. For reference the human eye has detailed angle of view of around 114 degrees horizontally.
I chose this camera for my caravan for my own reasons of not wanting to drill holes, not wanting wired connection (otherwise there needs to be a detachable connector between tow car and caravan - that's not an issue with a campervan), not wanting to source and wire a 12v supply from caravan to power camera, not wanting camera to be only operational when reverse gear selected - https://www.auto-vox.com/en-gb/products/auto-vox-tw1-wireless-backup-camera-for-car. I've had it for around 4 years now, and it's been great, and at the time of purchase, only cost around £100, which was a very good price compared to much of the competition.
I can't go through all the options on the market, there are far too many.
And Fiona W, not all of us have passengers to act as banksmen to guide us! - Some of us are solo and totally dependent on the camera!
Thank you both for responding. It seems there are a few thing to be considered with a camera. Time to decide! I will look at the link you sent Monty15. Many Thanks
I fitted an autovox system to our car/caravan. Wish I had done it years ago, it would have been very useful when we travelled in Europe.
Ours is the solar 4. The camera has its own battery built in and I have never found I run out of power There is a small solar panel supplied if you need it for the camera. It connects to the monitor by bluetooth and I have never experienced any connection issues. I leave it running full time as a rear view system.
I certainly can recommend it for simple installation and good results. Works from the back of our 21 ft. van to the monitor on the dashboard.. In fact, when we pitched the van on one occasion, I forgot to turn it off and when I went to drive down to the supermarket later that day, realised I was still receiving the signal as I drove away.
I highly recommend a rear camera that is also a reverse camera when my van is put into reverse gear.
I believe the system also warns me of potential side impacts when I put on the side indicators to change lanes.
I had this system put into my van aftermarket (the van was not the original spec I had in mind, she was the best I could find in UK in 2020 during Covid when VW stopped production).
Not at home right now to look for the instruction manual, however, I shall see what I can find on monitor tomorrow morning.

Thank you all for your advice. Aftef consideration, I have ordered the autovox system as recommended by Ancient uncle, especiallyly as it mentions easy installation. Thanks again all for your help and advise. First trip out at the end of October.
