Bonjorno. I'm looking to buy a VW campervan to travel round europe for 4 months. As this is to be an expensive undertaking on a small budget i'm keen to know the varying miles to the gallon i can get from different models to budget best for petrol. Does anyone know the different figures?

Many thanks

I have a 1972 Type 2 Bay window camper, 1600 Twin Port, the engine is pretty clapped out on mine, in need of a service, however I get somewhere between 25 and 35 to the gallon.

Cheers  Ratty

I did a tour of Europe in the 70's in a petrol engined Ford Transit, was away from home about 4 months and traveled about 10,000 miles.......if I had bought a camper with a diesel engine my money would have lasted a lot longer!!

its allways hard to quote mpg as they differ with engine condition and driving style but to be realistic i would say reckon on 20-25 miles per gallon for petrol if you get more then thats a bonus,

if you get a diesel then think about 25-30 again if you get more all the better

you will probaly be better to avoid high tops as they have more wind resistance and so less mpg

ive just taken a 1600 diesel of the road and it can do 35mpg but i have to drive thoughtfully to get that

i am running a 1.9 petrol hightop and fully loaded i can just about get 25mpg on a good day

they said it couldnt be done so i left it and went camping

a bad days camping is better than a good day at work

I get 41 mpg from my Autosleeper Trooper, VW 2.5TDI diesel. This is accurate since I have kept a log since it was new, over 17,000 miles travelled. This is after using some diesel for the Eberspacher space heater fitted. I do not know how much this takes (I suspect very little), but I do use this heater quite a bit in Spring and Autumn.
