Our smallest room is beginning to whiff a bit it's not the loo, i think it's the waste and pipes,  is it safe to pour bleach down the plug holes or is there a product that i can buy to make it small sweet again

Thanks

Susan

You can get green stuff from those nice people who make blue and pink stuff (Aquakem) - I usually bung half a bottle down the waste outlet, 3/4 fill the grey tank with water and drive round for a few hours - not sure how enviromentally friendly the stuff is, so empty it down the toilet if you can.

Try some pine disinfectent  it normal does the trick for me. When the sink and stuff get a bit smelly. Aquakem a bit expensive for that job.

I've been putting a bit of bleach down each waste hole about twice a year and it works well.  I hope it doesn't do any harm - no problems so far, but if anyone knows of any please let me know!

I often put a very weak diluted solution of bleach down our motorhome kitchen and shower room sinks in order to kill any bacteria that might be lurking around and it also helps to keep everything smelling nice and fresh. I am especially extra careful  if I know I wont be using my motorhome for a while - don't like the idea of all them nasty germs just lying in wait in my pipes.  Hope bleach doesn't do any harm - but can't see why it should though. Disinfectant is also something I pour down the sink from time to time and we also put sterilisng fluid through the water tanks every so often.

Hope this helps and if you don't fancy using any of these chemicals - just pour a kettle full of boiling hot water down and keep a room freshener block in your shower room.

Buster products are made specifically for this purpose for both caravans and the home.  Different one for kitchen sinks and for bathrooms / showers.  Safe (they say). They seem to work well.  Available from some major superstores (got mine at Morrisons) but see

Hi Susan,

You seem to have the problem sorted but I'll chip in anyway. We had a smelly sink, even after draining the waste tank, if we did not use the van for a week or two ( I know we should be off every weekend, but you have to cut the grass sometime ).

We didn't fancy carrying bottles of bleach but found Sink Sprinkles granules from www.lakelandlimited.co.uk Ref 20318 keep the pongs at bay, they also do Basin sprinkles but we have not tried them yet.

A word of warning though, you must not use them if you have gold taps in the Kontiki

                      Cheers

Hi Folks,

Whilst you all have some method to displace the smells, no one has come up with a method to eliminate them completely.

All wast pipes, whether in the home or in your motorvans have a form of "U" bend, or "Water Trap" under the sink. As long as there is water in either of these, there should be no smell from your pipes. In other words the water in your "Trap" inhibits the smell from the pipe entering the vehicle.

If your vehicle has been laid up for a while or sometimes in very hot weather, the water in the trap evaporates, thus allowing the smell to enter the van.

First and foremost make sue that there is always water in the traps, i.e.pour some down with a kettle every day or so if the van is not being used. If the smells persist, unscrew the trap from under the sink and clean it out, but before doing this, place a small bowl or even a soup plate under the trap as there might be some water still in the bottom. Debris from kitchen plates etc. collect in these traps and because they are so small, it doesn't take long for them to block up. Don't forget the shower trap. I forgot to mention it hence the reason for further editing.

Another method is to pour a few bucketfulls of soda crystals and hot water down your kitchen sink or toilet basin trap, making sure that the waste water stopcock under the vehicle is closed, and then drive round for a couple of days. This swirls the solution round the tank and cleans it.

I trust that these tips will cure your smells once and for all, if they persist then your waste water tank requires a really good clean.

Regards

Tassie

Hi to ALL

Well said Tassie l agree completely and add a couple more points to all concerned that is tempted to put disinfectant or bleach down the waste.

Allways leave your waste water tank outlet open when not in use to stop the gasses from building up.

Secondly NEVER/NEVER spill any of the above mixtures on your plastic bowls or shower tray or believe me it wont be long before you need a new one please read the manufacturers instructions they tell you never to use anything else but mild soap and water and they are correct.

Regards Brian

P.S. I use these plastic items every day.
