I am viewing a Peugeot Tabbert motorhome (1984 - with some work needed doing £3000.00) tomorrow but have just been told the speedo doesnt work and the mileage incorrect (not known although a mileage was given)
My question is : Should I leave well alone and look elsewhere or is this something that can be fixed and not illegal and still worth viewing the m'home. (have seen photos and it looks quite nice!)
Its a left hand drive with documentation. I know gas checks, and damp checks need doing, but its the speedo and mileage bit that concerns me.
I will be very grateful for your thoughts on this cos you are experienced with motorhomes and I'm not!
Many thanks
Donna

Hi personely i would'nt touch it with a bardge pole, i do not have motor home, but would not buy a car with a speedo that has not worked for a while. Do you have the last mot to check the mileage?

We will see all the paper work tomorrow if we still go. It had an MOT in August so it should be written on that but Im not sure how many MoT Cert' there are. We have had a car that the speedo is a bit dickey but not where the mileage isn't recorded which is why I wondered on the legal bit and if fixable.

I always have reservations about people selling vehicles with faults. If the oven doesnt work and they havent repaired it because they do't cook in the van, thats one thing, but a speedo is an essential piece of stuff thats legally required.Bit dodgy they havent fixed it.
I would keep looking. If it is genuinely broken and they havent bothered to fix it that is a good indicator that they have neglected the vehicle in other ways.
Hardly likely to have kept it serviced if they drive around with a broken speedo.
Agree with bill 1953 there all the legally required controls...speedo,brakes lights etc. should be working at least at time of purchase so if you are still interested in it then insist everything should be working(speedo and all)or look elsewher!
i would just say be aware ..........in belgium we have somthing like your AAA and there you can let every care check , the tell you exactly this care is still good for buy or not ,
We have read your advice and see the common sense of your replies, so we will NOT be going to look at the motorhome. Thank you all very much for your swift replies. As the season is drawing to end for so many people we know a lot more will be coming up for sale and will take our time to find the right one.
Cheers All

To Dizzywitch, are you anywhere near Huddersfield or can go there , I know a guy near Holmfirth , who's as straight as an arrow and really good to deal with. He could point you maybe in the right direction or might even have. He's the only dealer I know from experience you can trust to stand over what he tells you.I don't live on the mainland so I'm extra careful I don't run myself into Unnecessary
Grief.
If so email me at bentaxle4x4 at hotmail.com for further contact details.
if previous owners have listed mileage on the document when transferring ownership (this is not compulsory) then the DVLA will have a record. Any previous MOT certificates will detail mileage. You can do a vehicle check on DVLA website. If mileage cannot be substantiated then save your money unless you are p[repared to spend considerably more than the asking price. Good luck

you could always offer much less ...say 2500 because it is not working and mileage is suspect but if they are genuine and it has just got a recently broken cable you are insinuating they could be crooked.
cables do go like that but it could be something more serious and harder to fix like the speedo or the speedo drive and either would be quitre hard to replace on a vehicle of that age.
have a good look on e bay and dealer web sites and compare prices to see if you are getting a good or reasonable deal and you can always increase your offer if that is the one for you but you can't knock it down after a price has been agreed and you find you can't get a replcement speedo

Surely the MOT Certificate will state the speedo reading at the time of the test with the vehicle stationary. The tester would not know that the speedo was not working and would just record the indicated mileage, which may not have changed for several years.
