Hello Magpieman,
You are sooooo lucky, we love Romahomes but as I've said in the past we need a towbar and the general consenus seems to be that it can't be done on a Romahome because of the 'overhang.'
I'm sure you once said that you knew of Romahomes with towbars but I've asked various secondhand motorhome dealers selling Romahomes and even companies who fit towbars if it can be done and they all say it can't. We would buy one tomorrow if only it would take a towbar.
Enjoy yours!!
Hi Pearldrummer
Our new Romahome which is a Dimension does have a tow bar and it is an official Citroen towbar, but as I say that is a Dimension.
However, I feel sure I have seen other Romahomes with towbars, next time I see one I will ask them where they got it fitted.
My wife (Romanie) has put a question on the forum of Romaclub website asking about tow bars, but since then we have found an old thread regarding putting towbars on Romahomes here is the Link
hope that helps
Thanks Magpieman for taking the trouble to look into this for me. The link you gave mentioned Watling towbars and after doing a search on 'google' I've found that they do a towbar for Romahomes for £167. I've printed this info off and am gonna keep hold of it for future reference for when we finally find a Romahome we can afford!
Just been to see a Romahome dealer who also repairs them, and I mentioned a towbar, he said a company in Poole do the towbars, but you must be very careful, as it will only take a very lightweight one, and he said that if you were in a bump then it could rip out your floor.
Also asked about an Fiamma side awning, but he did not recommend as the sides of a Romahome are curved and the pressure placed on it when driving was not good for the vehicle.
Thankyou very much Joan for remembering I was asking about Romahome towbars!
It's interesting what you say, we would only be towing a small trailer but I hadn't realised the floor could be ripped out in a bump ......... oh dear it looks more and more like a Romahome won't do for us, much as we love them.
We've been having a look at Transit sized campers but haven't yet found anything that we like and can also afford!
Ah well, will keep searching and if it starts getting to Spring and we still haven't got anything then we'll panic ........... or drag the tent out of the attic!
May sound like a silly question, but why do you want to tow a small trailer? My husband and I spent 6 weeks touring Scotland and the Hebrides, and lacked nothing including far too many clothes and coats for himself, my laptop, tv, cd player and spkers, hiking boots, fishing gear, lounging chairs, bino's large size, and sufficient medicine for 16 weeks! CD's games, enough food to feed an army and awning, in fact everything but the house kitchen sink. It took me 12 hours to pack up and we still had space and comfort. Found out that I didnt need half of it really, and even brought himself another 4 shirts whilst in Fort William!!
You have 4 lockers, plus the luton, and if you place a rail across the luton and make pockets this gives you extra storage, lots to go into the pelments, double cupboard under the sink, wardrobe clothes and bottles, sink itself carries, t-towels, etc. In fact an Auto-Sleeper Executive, could not cope with the items out of a Romahome, not unless you stored in the shower area. I know this for a fact, as friends changed up to this, and in the end brought a very large Bessacar, which is a fixture on the drive, where the Romahome plus 2 adults and 2 dogs plus awning went everywhere including Europe. They are little tardises, it the way you pack em as Frank Carson would say.
I think you can tell I love my Romahome and I still look at other styles and makes, but nothing comes up to the Romahome!!!
The reason we will need to tow a trailer is because we have a small sailing dinghy which used to go on the car roof when we towed the caravan but we're not going to be able to take it away with us anymore unless it goes on the camper roof or on a trailer. As well as the sailing dinghy we have a big inflatable with engine, a canoe and a giant inner tube from a tractor (we love being on water!) plus a bike each!
If we go away for above a weekend we like all our toys to come with us and when towing the caravan it was easy cos if it didn't fit on top of or in the estate car it got chucked inside the caravan. We've had a caravan for the last 20 years while our 2 children were growing up but we always promised ourselves that when it got to the stage were they weren't coming with us anymore we would change to a motorhome .......... that time has now come.
Your 6 weeks touring Scotland is exactly what we want to do, the kids would have hated travelling round all the time but now we can do all the journeys we've thought of over the years, we just need to find something to do it in!!
I don't blame you for loving your Romahome, we'd set our heart on one, but it's no use getting one if we won't be able to take the things we enjoy with us anymore, towing a trailer would solve everything.
So if you come up with an ingenious idea to solve our probs, pleeeeese tell us!!
