If you had £7000 and needed to buy a van, what would you go for ? What would you avoide like the plague ? Would you buy from a dealer or private ?  Do I need special insurance to live in the van full time ?

Picking your very valuable brains here. Very pleased with advice from members so far.

For £7k--your looking at a campervan like a '91 VW T4 based or same aged Talbot/fiat based--if you want a larger coachbuilt motorhome it will be mid to late 80s--certainly buy privately--a dealer selling a van this age wont give much of a guarrantee & will still want a silly(high)price--so try private & make the seller an offer---no particular ones to avoid--best buy will be totally dependant on condition & how well the previous owner has looked after it--If your living in it full time in the uk normal insurance is ok--provided you have a permanent adress as well---if you want to spend long periods on the continent--most motorhome insurance only allow 90 days per trip unless your over 50 & insure with Saga who allow all year--but van must return to uk one a year for MOT--now is a good time to buy a motorhome as it is off season--
