Hello everyone,

Thanks to everyone who has helped me so far. I am going to look at a few private motorhomes for sale this week. I was wondering if there are any specific things I should look out for? I am a complete novice so I would appreciate any assistance.

Cheers guys,

Karl

Hi,

I am new too, but have laernt a bit while buying our MH.

On piece of advice is to have an HPI check, you don't want to buy a van that is tolen or has outstanding HP on it.  You will not own the van in either  case - very bad news as you lose your money.

When you ahve got a MH you will have a lot of fun.

There are 2 things to consider here - 1 is the actual cab and engine, so might be worth taking someone with you who knows about mechanics and 2 - the caravan bit on the back - check for damp if poss with a detector, or feel with your fingers around the windows, corners, bathroom, under the beds,  etc for soft spongy walls. Try peeling back the rubber around the windows particularly near the sink for damp. Your nose is a good indicator if there is damp present.

Check everything is working ie water pump, electrics both off mains and battery. Check gas cooker and fire is working. Check blinds (if fitted) are all working. Check floor - if soft and spongy may need re-laminating, particularly around the entrance door and outside the bathroom door.

My advice to you if buying private is to make a check-list b4 you go of everything you can think of. Hope you get a good one and good luck with your search

I have been 'motorhoming' for about 5 years now - I know my way around them but I wouldn't consider buying private. The potential to stuff it up completely is just so big. If you can afford to drop the purchase price in the street then go private. Otherwise, buy from a dealer or find someone who knows motorhomes inside out and upside down to go with you

thanks guys, I'm making 2 checklists, one for the mechanical side of the van and another for the habitation side.

Thanks

Karl
