I agree with Bad penny. If I am on a bus and it has seat belts I use them but looking around I'm the only one doing so. I suppose its looked on as being "wimpish" by the younger ones today (I'm retired).
We have just changed our motorhome from a rear lounge to a front lounge with four seat belts so this question no longer applies to us, but as I said earlier in the posts its not illegal to carry passengers but thank fully its in the past for us.

Just read all this and now my brain hurts.

Stepson's partner wants to come away with us in the MH (1993 Elddis Eclipse), with the grandaughter who is just 13 months.

We have sideways facing rear seats with no belts, and the only seat that has a 3-point belt that meets the child restraint requirements is the front passenger seat (well, the driver's seat does too, but she can't reach the pedals yet).

Would it be legal to have her in the child seat in the front, while her mum and I take our chances in the back? There are no air bags fitted.

I have also had the same reaction from the parties concerned and so I contacted my insurance company for clarification and they told me that anyone travelling in the rear of my motor home without seat belts are not insured.

its a grey area i think depending on who you ask, mines a 2000 4 birth and im the only driver, i have 3 lap belts forward facing on the sofa/bed at the rear, my passengers (and dog) wear these when im driving, my insurance asked if belts were fitted, and must be worn, yet a police friend of mine said it should be 3 point belts and i can be prosecuted, this makes my lap belts obsolete and lord knows how families travel in vans that dont have rear belts fitted at all, very confusing

Things have certainly moved on for the better since this thread was started. There are up to 5 belted seats in the medium sized family campervans. We have a Sussex Campervans Manhattan, with a double swivel passenger seat in the cab as well as the driver's seat and two belted seats in the rear, on the Rock and Roll bed.
They also do the VW Caledonia and the Nissan NV300/Renault Trafic-based Paradise.
