We've been researching freestanding awnings for our citreon relay high top murvi morello and the more we look the more confused we become. Do anyone use an awning with a flap that goes part-way over the roof of van & pegs on other side (such as the foxwell products maxim)?- thought this may not be very easy to use in practice . another on the short list is the kyham motordome awning it looks good -but we aren't sure how we would attach it as we have no awning rail. does anyone recommend this awning? the other on our short list is the navigator but how robust is it and how does it attach to van?
I've just been down this route: we thought we needed an awning to extend the van space (similiar size to you Morello), so we bought a Khyam classic because we had a Khyam tent and knew the quality. well suffice to say we used it once this Easter and decided that thought is one thing but experience is quite another. The Khyam goes up quite quickly and is robust and well designed but, well you still have to peg it down, you have to dry it when it gets wet, you've got to store it in the van (not small). You've also got to attach it. So one way is to have a J-rail on your van, or use the figure of eight pieces to attach to the gutter (if they will), Yes you can launch the lines over the top of the van and peg down but mine is too tall for that manouever. If you have an awning fitted that will seriously mess up your attachment plans, it just makes it ten times more awkward. You've also got to be pedantically accurate with your parking when re-attaching. Now I'm not saying it ain't possible or desirable to have one but I would say consider it all carefully. The Khyam is a good awning and you wouldn't regret buying it but with the Murvelo I'd go for the Excelsior as it's higher and wider (sliding door). Personally I'm going to stick with my wind-out awning and a windbreak, one Khyam Motrodome Classic going on e-bay!!
