We went to France recently and travelled through the night.  We made up the main bed at the back of the van and had 3 children facing sideways asleep on it.  We also have fixed bunk beds and have had a child asleep on there.  can anyone give us a legal stance on this?

Hi- as far as I can see, if the beds/ seats do not have seat belts fitted, then you would not be breaking frence law, but bear in mind if you were invovled in a rear end shunt, god help the sleeping children, the thought hardly wants thinking about, and I suspect the police would then consider that you would be prosicuted for endangering there lives. For saftys sake, pull in and make up the time the next day.

Your reply is pretty much what we had told ourselves. Our kids are awful at travelling, we have bought a dvd player and have tried all the usual travel games.

I suspect there is no perfect answer!!

My motorhome his fixed bunks, however we never travel with the kids sleeping in their bunks for safety reasons. For overnight trips we makeup the dinette double (the one time we ever do so) and the kids can then sleep comfortably while belted in (and able to watch DVD's etc.). My wife sometimes sleeps there with them, using the rearward facing seats
